Favorite thing: A Famosa means the famous in Portugese - it was once a very mighty fotress.
It is among the oldest surviving European remains in Asia.
This is once part of the Porta de Santiago, built by Portugese invader Alberqueque. The fort changed hands in 1641 when the Dutch drove the Portuguese out of Melaka.
The fortress changed hands again in the early 19th century when the Dutch handed it over to the British to prevent it from falling into the hands of Napolean's expansionist France.
But the English and ordered its destruction in 1806. The fort was almost totally demolished but intervention by Singapore founder, Sir Stanford Raffles,
who happened to visit Melaka in 1810, it was spared from total destruction.

Favorite thing: At the front of the church ruins you will see lots of people looking at this statue and all children will ask why 'one had lost'!!!
The body was placed in a new coffin and taken back to Goa. The Pope canonized Francis Xavier in 1614, but only upon condition that Francis' right arm be brought to Rome. Legend had it that when the arm was severed, blood flowed as freely as before.

Favorite thing: The church is famous because it was here that the body of St Francis Xavier, the pioneering Catholic missionary of SEAsia once lied here for 8 months during 1553.
The open grave is covered by blue wire mesh.
There are a number of strange incidences relating to the body of Francis Xavier. Strangest of all is that his body is still on display at the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa, India (it is open to the public once every 10 years).
Like many saints, the body has resisted extensive decay for almost 500 years.
The saga of St Francis Xavier's body began shortly before the time of his death. As Xavier lay dying in San Chian, China, he instructed the sailors accompanying him to return his bones to Goa in India. When St Francis Xavier died the sailors put lots of quicklime ffin to help decay faster making it lighter to bring his bones back to Goa.
According to legend the sailors temporarily buried the body in Sancian while the sailors attended to other business. When the ship was about to leave, the coffin was brought on board and opened. But the body remain very 'fresh' looking.

Favorite thing: Melaka river is the real heart of Melaka and the pile-dwellings on its shores are very picturesque.
Some of them are just private houses, others are bars and restaurants.
The onky drawback: mosquitoes and the bad smell of the river water.

Favorite thing: Along Jalan Tokong (Temple street where the famous Cheng Hoon temple is), is the Kampung Kling Mosque.
This is one of the oldest in the country; it was built during the 17th century.
It has a unique architecture which is a blend of Sumatran and Western architecture with a 3 tier pyramid roof, a touch of Hindu influence perhaps but also has a pagoda look. The carved wooden ceiling is supported by elegant Corinthian-styled columns.
The floor is laid with English and Portugese glazed tiles.
The mosque is located at the junction of Jalan Lekiu and Jalan Tukang Emas.
