Favorite thing: the church is called also Our Lady of the Hill, this was built by the Portugese who conquered Melaka after the Dutch.

Just some information to those new to Melaka, the Portugese conquered Melaka in hope to control the Straits of Melaka. Melaka since late 13th century was thriving port with lots of Arab traders for spices and gold etc.
The Arab brought in the Islam, but the Portugese brought in Catholicism. Then the Dutch and the British came in 17th and 18th Century respectively, building churches in Melaka and Penang.

The Stadthuys - The house of The Governors

3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Audrey118 1381 reviews

Favorite thing: The red building, Stadthuys was once the official residence of the Dutch Govenors and officers.
The Stadthuys was built around the 1600s. Believed to be the oldest Dutch building in Asia, it has incredibly weighty doors and pleasant louvred window, all the characteristic features of Dutch colonial architecture.
It is now a historical site to many tourist and houses the Museum of History and Ethography - worth going in to see some old stuff - old plates, maps etc.

Mousedeer Roundabout

Favorite thing: Melaka was founded in 1396 by an exiled Sumatran prince named Parameswara.

Legend had it that Parameswara on his hunting trip one day, he rested under a tree, and one of his dogs cornered a mousedeer and in defense, the mousedeer kicked the dog smartly on its nose. Impressed by the mousedeer’s courage and what he believed was a good luck sign, Parameswara decided to build his empire on this sacred land and named it after the tree he was sitting under, which was the Melaka tree
Here is a mousedeer replica in the centre of Melaka town.

Beautiful Malay village

Favorite thing: This is a very unqiue view taken from the hotel above - it is such a pretty view of the Malay village (kampong ) and it is located at the end of Jalan Bunga Raya. So unique to me is the harmonius rooftop - similar patterns and colour. You can walk across to the kampung via the bridge.

Old houses by the river

Audrey118 1381 reviews

Favorite thing: This is trully a famous Melaka scene, the old houss by the river, taken not too far from the red buildings.

The scene is really pretty and one Melaka artist, Jehan Chan made himself famous with wonderful oilwork of this scene. The artist gallery is along of the street parallel to Jonker Walk.

Jonker Walk

3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Audrey118 1381 reviews

Favorite thing: Jonker Walk located at Jalan Hang Jebat was meant as a showcase to reflect the state's rich ethnic, cultural & historical heritage

During the night (Friday-Sunday) it is like a night market but in the day the old prewar shops is rally like a flea market with a Malaccan cultural flavour.

There are plenty of stalls setup by the road side selling curios, antiques, local delicacies, souvenirs and many interesting items. There are lots of restaurants, dessert shops, second hand stuff shops, souveniers etc

Fondest memory: The picture is of a huge antique shop and I have seen this boy sitting here for more than 20 years!!!

Harmony Street.....

Fondest memory: There are a lot of ethnic diversity in Melacca. Chinese, Hindu, Budist and Muslim churches are all on the one street called Harmony Street, all next to each other. No fighting, no wars. We could all learn a lot from these people.

Unique Blend Of Cultures

Favorite thing: The pace of the Melaka city is very comfortable. Its so unlike the massive hussle and bustle of the KL city (whish is just 1 and a half hours away) but it is also not slow, undeveloped or neglected at the same time.

Besides that, people here are helpful and are always willing to give you a hand when you need it.

Visiting historical places in Melaka is not very difficult. Its mostly centered around one area.

Main Mode Of Transport : Taxis, Busses, Trishaws, Boat Excursions down the Melaka River, Rented Cars, Your Own Cars.

Fondest memory: My fondest memory of Melaka is my growing up days. Well i cant help it, I am from Melaka and i dont know what else could be my FONDEST memory ot this state :)

What i miss most when i am away from Melaka?
My Family, my house and of course my bed.
