Mahkota Parade: Mahkota Parade - the new shopping empire in Melaka

Mahkota Parade

With its tagline "New Shopping Empire in Melaka", Mahkota Parade is no doubt the premier shopping mall in the historical city where locals and tourist love to go.

Located at the mouth of the Malacca River and within the touristy area of Banda Hilir, the large mall offers a variety of fun, food and fashion under one roof. The anchor tenant here is Parkson Grand. Apart from a department store and cineplex, Mahkota Parade is also home to a large amusement centre, bowling alley, foodcourts and many restaurants.

The mall won the Malaysia Tourism Gold Awards in 1994/95 for Best Shopping Complex when it was merely one year old. However over the years its facilities and services seem deteriorating. Nevertheless, its still the premier shopping mall in Melaka and worth a visit.

What to buy: Shirts, shoes, houshold products etc.

What to pay: Prices of goods here are more or less about average.

Malacca House: gift shops - interior decor and knick knacks

There are very many similar shops along the jonker street as well as along Hereen St (Tun Tan Cheng Lock) and now it is slowly spreading to the smaller streets along J Tokong etc. Many of these prewar old houses r in bad shape, and having entreprenuers taking over it, at least helps to preserve its old time peak. Just imagine the wealth that these houses once had....

worthnoting is the extremely long houses, some more than 200 feet deep inside...venture to one...it is just amazing....

there are a lots of antiques shops (with all what you can imagen) , chinise shops (papers for burning,...), artesan shops (things of natural wood). If you want to buy something sweet to eat you have a big shopping centre at the port near the St. Paul's hill. There you will find donuts.. and all sort of things.

antique shopping

You can find quaint little shops like this all along Jonker Street...most sell antiques and souvenirs, there are even one or two that offer painted wooden sandals for sale.

What to buy: Melaka is well-known as a haven for antiques, however if you are not an antique expert, best bring along a friend who knows the genuine from the fake.

The Orangutan House

The name may be deceiving but this is actually an art studio by Malaccan born artist Charles Cham. The exterior of the building is quite unique & eye catching, once inside U'll admire Charles' work of arts.

If U not really into arty stuff, maybe the t-shirts with loud design by him will be of interest to U - a good souvenier to take home as these t-shirts are exclusively available here.

What to buy: Paintings, arty stuffs and t-shirts, lots of t- shirts to chose from.

What to pay: Depends on what U wanna buy, prices for paintings varry and t-shirt start frm RM20 above.

Tan Kim Hock

This is definately the shop being visited by almost every visitor to Melaka....!!! Why because they sell all the Malaccan speciality from Cincalok, to Durian Dodol to even instant Bak Kut Teh or Curry powder.

What to buy: The Coconut Sweet is pretty okay, cost about RM3.80 for 200gm. But overall the price are quite pricey.

Never ever eat the cendol, cost too much, RM3.00 for a bowl... see my Cendol food recommendation on Cendol.
