Visit the oldest protestant church in M'sia , right at the Dutch Square Just around the corner, not too far from the fountain in Dutch Square is probably the oldest protestant church in Malaysia. This is a church was built sometime in 1753 by the Dutch and it is as much a Melakan icon as the fountain and the clock tower. If you do venture inside, look out for the beams with no joints, the hand-made pews dated some 200 years and the tiled artwork of the 'Last Supper' at the altar . Look out too, for the tombstones incorporated into the floor of the church, most of which are written in Portuguese. "Greetings! you who are reading this tablet of my tomb in which I now sleep. Give me the news, the freedom of my countrymen, for them I did much weep. If there arose among them one good guardian to govern and keep. Vainly I expected the world to see a good shepherd came to look after the scattered sheep." (Translation from a Tombstone, found off the floor on Christchurch, Melaka) Now, if you look carefully on the floor of Christ Church in Melaka, you'll discover that it is lined with ancient tombstones. Inscribed on these tombstones little cryptic messages written in Portuguese that beckon every unwary parishioner. Since it is unlikely that the Dutch would have used Catholic-Portuguese tombstones inside their church, Malaysian historians concluded that they were installed there by the British. Christ Church was built in 1753, and is located on the main town square. It has that typical red laterite external appearance that most of the old buildings in the centre of Melaka have. One suggestion to the Malay Tourism Authority: Need to lose the communcations tower right behind the church, to give the square a bit more colonial ambviance... Leave a Comment

The old Christ Church, remainder from the Dutch period. Situated near Jalan Laksamana and Jalan Gereja in Melaka city. This is a churh built in 1753 by Dutch to commemorate a century of their rule. The bricks were brought all the way from Holland and it is reputed as the oldest protestant church in Malaysia. It is now an Anglican Church. The building shows the ingenuity of the Dutch architectural world. The beams were constructed from cutting and carving from a single tree and have no joints. The hand-made pews dated back some 200 years. The altar is a beautiful piece of the 'Last Supper' done in glazed tiles. Leave a Comment Address: Jalan Laksamana/Gereja, Melaka

Nice little square where you will find the Christ Church . From there is a walk upward to the older area where you can get a fantastic view of the harbour. The only standing gate of the city still remains here in Melaka. Close by is the replica of the King's palace all carved in wood. You will get a lot of trishaws in front of Christ Church . For a photo op you will have to pay him. Mostly the trishaw riders are all old men so you feel really bad to hire them to ride you around town.
