Used as an outpost to enforce the monopoly of tax collection. It was manned by a small garrison of Dutch officers but was later abandoned when the mining in Naning area ceased its operation.

This square was established in 1650, was the Administrative Center of Meleka during the Dutch colonial period. On the square are the Stadthuys, now a Melaka history Museum, and Christ church.

The clock tower was given by Tan Jiak Kim in 1866 to fulfill the wishes of his father Tan Beng Swee. In 1982, the old clock tower was replaced and is exhibited in the Malacca Museum.
