Flames coming out from the steamboat funnel by yipsufen Highland Restaurant - for a truly one of a kind steamboat experience, try their ever popular charcoal steamboat. The burning charcoal gives the added smoked aroma to the steamboat dishes. Since you can't switch off the fire like the modern steamboat counterparts, the soup just keeps on boiling away! You might catch a glimpse of fire shooting out of the steamboat funnel! Like volcano erupting. Quite fun to try it out! For those who do not know what is a steamboat. It is a "do-it-yourself" cook-in where a variety of raw meat, seafood and vegetables are cooked in steaming hot soup. It's good to eat steamboat in the cold or rainy nights. The burning charcoal inside the funnel emits lots of heat and you will feel warmth wrapping your body. Since you can't control the fire, sometimes the heat is too hot to handle and you will sweat. The restaurant only serves one type of soup, ie. clear soup. Soup is to be savored midway or later as it would be most tasty after boiling countless meat and vegetables. Truly a great savoury experience and a hearty meal ! The walls and ceiling of this restaurant looks a bit greyish, I think because of the endless smoke from charcoal steamboat. RM14 per pax and the portion is quite generous. Tea for two by sourbugger The tea rooms at the Boh (stands for 'best of Highland') tea plantations are excellent. They are cheaper than the one on the main road, not subject to coach parties and are liberally stocked with a range of mouthwatering cakes. The Tea is fresh and well made. They also do food - and menus can be found on their website. You can also get a tour of the tea processing plant on the estate - although this is not particularly inspiring and there is a short climb up to a beautiful viewpoint.
Tea (Boh's regular), and cake - looking over the plantations of course - still in the hands of the Scottish family that founded them back in the 1930's Leave a Comment Theme: OtherPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Boh Tea plantationsDirections: Off the main road up to Tanah RataWebsite: www.boh.com.my

T Cafe by yipsufen Quite a cozy restaurant located in Tanah Rata. Located on the first floor above the Merrybrown fast food restaurant opposite the new bus terminal. They have very nice apple pies, scones, cheese cakes and special pancakes. For main meals, go Chinese and try their Char Koay Teow or Hokkien Fried Noodles! A nice place to relax and have your meals with its warm ambience feeling! Recommended by Lonely Planet. Hong Kong Restaurant by anoum Very helpful waitress who is an Indonesian but speaks Cantonese fluently. You can have your meals on the terrace in front of the shop and watch the world go by.
Fish head curry. The gravy of the curry is thick and besides the usual curry spices, they have "bunga kantan", which gives oom to the flavour. If you don't enjoy curries which are too spicy, ask the waitress to cut down the chilli. Too few pieces of fish head though. There are a number of restaurants serving tasty South & Northern Indian food at Tanah Rata town. You can't miss them-they are located after the HSBC bank and souvenior shops and are almost all set in a row. If you are in a hurry, you can select from a number of pre-prepared spicy curries, marsalas, beriyani rice, or white rice. If you have a bit more time, you can get them to whip up some tandoori chicken with freshly oven-baked naans (a type of flat bread). They have many varieties: honey naan, banana naan, plain naan, cheese naan, garlic naan, etc. etc. The naan set (under RM10) was pretty good value-comes with tandoori chicken, mint sauce and curry gravy. They also serve hainanese chicken rice for those who don't like spicy food.
The naan with curry and tandoori chicken. Mango Laasi (a type pf yoghurt drink)-very creamy and yummy Strawberry Lassi Banana Naan was quite tasty as a dessert too. CaveatIf you are in a larger group, it is better to just choose from the pre-prepared dishes, or order the chicken rice. The tandoori & naan sets seemed to take a long time to be ready. However, we were not in a hurry, so we relaxed with our lassies, while waiting for our food to be served. Service was friendly & overall, the price was very reasonable. by zorcs The hawker place has been around for more than 15 years. It used to be on the main road and loyal customers used to be lining up for the stall's famous curry laksa and nasi lemak. Over the years, the local council has forced the stall to move from the main road at Tanah Rata to a hawker centre near it. The worst thing is the stall does not face the main road but away from it.
Excellent curry laksa. was told the nasi lemak is also good. didn't manage to eat nasi lemak because it was sold out. the owner recommended the stall chicken chop which I like it alot. Theme: Street VendorPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: least expensiveDirections: Opposite Hong Leong bank at tanah rate. There is a hawker centre that the local council build. Go behind the toilet. The stall faces the back of the hawker centre. Ask any of the local people, they will be able to tell you.

Black Pepper Fish, Chicken Mushrooms & Long Beans by yipsufen This seafood restaurant is famous for its signature dish - black pepper fish. Although fish in Cameron Highlands are mainly delivered from city but the cooking method is labourious. The fish is deboned by cutting into slices then deep fried with peppered batter. Lastly, the main fish bone and pieces of fried meat are arranged in order and sprinkled with grinded black pepper for taste. The condiment is Thai-style salad. The fish is deep fried until so crispy and chrunchy. For other dishes, why not order some fresh vegetables grown locally, like watercress, cabbage, long beans, etc. If you don't mind the swarm of flies here, this restaurant is a good choice at reasonable price.
