Stalls selling fresh produce and plants from Cameron Highlands line the main road at various locations. Among them are Green Farm, Bee Farm, Kea's Farm, Stawberry Farm (there are a few of these), Cactus Valley, Rose Valley, etc. Some charge entrance fees (averagely RM2-5), while others do not. Some specialise (eg. Cactus, Honey or Strawberries), while others are more general in nature. Address: 2-5 km from major hotels (Merlin or Equatorial) Directions: 2-5 km from most major hotels. Drive along the main road from Tanah Rata to Brinchang and onwards to Kg Raja, there are many stalls and shops along the way. You can also take the local Regal Bus (no aircon), if you don't have a car.
What To Buy: Fresh or dried flowers - available everywhere! Fresh fruits (some local to Camerons and others are from the low lands)-strawberries, if you like them. Jams and juices. Tamarillos - Cut into half, then sprinkle sugar, and scoop out with a spoon. Yummy when served cold! This fruit is only available in Cameron Highlands! (RM2 for 6 fruits ot RM5 a kilo) Plastic strawberry balls (see picture) which are a sure hit with the kids. Potted Plants at RM5 to RM10 each, suitable to brighten up your office or living room. I like the cactus because they are very hardy, and require so little care but are attractive in their own way. For a healthy treat, buy some freshly steamed sweet potatoes (RM2 per bag) and steamed corn in a cup (RM1-2 per cup) for a quick nibble. - they are quite yummy on a cool day!
What To Pay: RM5-10 for plants and you can bargain a little by buying a few more. BOH Tea is the biggest plantation and offers a wide variety of tea. Before you buy, you can sit down, relax and taste the tea you are interested in.
The golden blend black tea is very good, I also especially like the peach apricot flavoured tea.
Prices for the different teas can vary considerably. Be prepared to pay 10 - 30 RM Leave a Comment Theme: Food and DrinkAddress: BOH Tea plantations, Cameron HighlandsWebsite: www.boh.com.my

At the tail end of the Pasar Malam, there is this local shop that sells biscuits, tea, chocolates etc at the front of the shop. You'll need to walk further down into the shop to catch these cute little cactus. They sell the small potted cactus at 6 for 10 RM, slightly more expensive than the pasar malam. However, it comes with a plastic packaging to put your potted cactus nicely. For convenient sake, I decided to buy my cactus here and in fact, I bought 12 of them! I find that the cactus here are nicer than the ones sold at the market. Theme: FlowersAddress: Brinchang

Hillpiggy's stick by sourbugger Various gift-type shops sell the Burmese Army trekking stick, which is useful for jungle walks in the Cameron Highlands as it is : "indispensible for safe trekking particularly when negotiating sharp inclines and fording quick-moving streams." It is constructed of baby bamboo with a solid row-boat handle.
A little paper 'biography' comes with a purchase of the Burmese Army Trekking stick of its founder : Sir Jeffrey Hillpig-Smyth, but I am still trying to find out how much of it is a wind-up. Anyway, here is a shortened biography : 1910 Born, London 1918-28 Schoolboy, Harrow. Overweight, few friends, poor student, non-athletic yet polite. Called "Hillpiggy" by the staff. 1930 Sent down from Oxford for "indecency." 1934 Unsuccessfully stood for Parliament as an Independent from the small constituency of Looting on the Thames, finishing fourth in a field of three. 1935 Alcoholic 1936 Published at his own expense an angry and spirited collection of short essays entitled Sticks and Stones. 1937 Alcoholic again 1938 Published a second collection of short essays entitled Mudpuddles and Other Outrages 1939 Joined Military Intelligence & Engineering, the elite I&E Group 1940 Assigned to British Special Forces, Burma 1941 Recovering from a minor fall, designed the Military Trekking Stick 1944 Disappearance 1953 Knighted in absentia Unofficially there have been periodic sightings of Hillpiggy in the Burmese Jungle. A reward of 25 pounds sterling for information confirming Hillpiggy's status remains in effect. Eccentric or what ? Leave a Comment Theme: Other
