Another thing one absolutely should do in Cherating is to take a boat trip on the Cherating river.
The day tour takes 1,5 hrs and I saw lots of wildlife: monkeys, snakes, lizards, kingfisher and other birds. Usually there is a departure at 9am and at 4pm and a ticket is 25RM.
There is also firefly watching trip each night 8pm. Really amazing! This tour takes roughly 1 hr and costs 20RM.
Turtles come to the East Coast of Malaysia to lay eggs...I happen to catch one laying eggs when I visited in July...
If you want to see turtles, just inform the hotel of your interest and they can arrange it for you...Usually, hotels have contact with the Turtle Sanctuary, who will call them once they have sighted any turtles coming...
A fee of RM5 will be imposed when you go watch the turtles lay eggs. If you do not have any vehicle, an avg of RM20per person for transport ( to/fro)-inclusive of the RM5 for watching the turtles...
The money is put into a fund for turtle conservation....
Of course the main reason to come Cherating is the beach. It's long and wide, but unfortunately the water is a bit too shallow for swimming. The western end of the beach was very popular with surfers, especially with beginners.
During my stay Cherating was very quiet, but I guess this changes during holiday season.
Batik printing anyone???
Batik is one of Malaysia's unique traditional fabric. This one I'm talking about is hand made n need to go a series of repeated process of designing, waxing, dyeing, drying and boiling the cloth you're working on.
It's delicate, so need to be really patience. The outcome...you'll be amazed. The process of making one is even amazing. You need to try it...then you'll know.
There's a few places offering batik printing in Cherating village n along the street there. You can try out your skill and dig up your talents in batik printing.
Well, since there were plenty of jelly fishes in the water during my trip so I had to forget swimming. Oh, let's not forget that swimming is not really encouraged along Cherating... the waves are strong n level of sand beneath is unpredictable. Look out for warning signs "no swimming"...n be extra careful when you choose to swim.
Bought some food from the local restaurants...bought a lot of "keropok lekor" (a family of chips made from fish)...your visit to the East Coast is incomplete if you don't try this!!!
It is lucky! at this period is Turtle hatching egg season...so we got the chance to touch and see the babies turtle that the government will keep it and then release it after few months, when the babies turtle is suitable to return to ocean....it is so cute...U can get a lot of info there...there is a lot of babies turtle, once u pick them, u have to pamper on his head and he will sleep...as in the pictures...
As usual, everyone will do...BEACH WALK...u can relaxing walk along the beach, feel the wind blowing, wave hitting the sand, baby crabs running back to home for hiding, see children playing, family gathering, maybe can collect some beautiful shell...
Wow! this is my first time create my own batik...it look like easy, but it test ur skill & patient...sure i m satisfied of my creation, i m sure it will be better for my next creation...practice makes perfect...hahaha...really an experience...if u r there, go for it...dun envy for others batik, now u can say i have mine...a unique batik...there is a few process to go...scratch, wax, wait...then colour... make sure u have idea of the batik...really fun!...
My friend tried the surfing last 2 years...he enjoy it...i didn't have the picture, but I can tell this place is famous with Surfing...it has to be on Nov-Dec...the wave is quite huge...check it out...
I risk too much repeating of a tip that might have been given by hundreds of other visitors to cherating but i love sipping black kampung coffee by the roadside cafe Hai Peng, under branches of shadowy raintree.. while chickens run around my feet.. chukai fast becoming busy township.. more cars and new road system and parking system, and fast losing its kedai papan town charm.. go there before its too late or the kaya bun get too small
