    Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary

Kuala Gandah elephant sanctuary is one of the most perfect places on earth, and not just because i was a volunteer there for a number of months, but because you actually get the chance, as a visiter to interact with an elephant, feed it, wash it and ride it. Mentopyan and Mawar (the two elephants you ride and wash) are both very friendly and Mawar loves to have her tongue tickled and will follow you everywhere if she thinks you have food... even when you have run out... On the whole though, a fantastic day out for everyone

A quick ride around the park...

Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary is located in Pahang at the fringe of Taman Negara and is the home of homeless elephants.

It is dedicated to save the endangered Malaysian elephant but all this costs money and lots of it.

At the sanctuary, visitors have the opportunity to not only see these powerful pachyderms, but also to interact with them.

The afternoon started wit a tasty lunch of Nasi Goreng followed by a short video documentary at the visitor centre. After this there was ample opportunity to feed, ride and bathe with the elephants in the nearby river.

There are clean change rooms located at the sanctuary where you can put on your bathers and then dry off after swimming with the elephants.

Unless you have private transport, the best way to get there is on an organised tour. We joined the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary tour and our guide for the day was Michael, the owner MM Adventure Services. It took roughly two hours to drive there.

The cost of the tour was RM530.00 for 3 persons which included pickup from our KL accommodation, meals, refreshments, local fruits and entrance to the park. It didn't include a Donation/Conservation Fee which costs RM20.00 per person.

This is just about 3 km from Kuala Gandah Elephant Orphanage Sanctuary. There are many wild deer here. Other animals include 2 baby bears, 3 ostrich and 4 mousedeer, birds, monkeys and snakes.

Entrance fee is about RM10.00 but we only paid RM5.00 each person.

You can feed the animals and take photos with them.
