you may want to opt ot play with the eles in the water....bring along a t shirt and shorts - and no sunnies and no specs - you may loose them in the dirty river...and never ever find them. the thrill is ride on top and then the ele will triumphantly throw you into the river...people have lots of fun.
there is a make shift place to shower - but bring your towel, shampoo and lots of soap to clean after that!!!

and to my amazement the eles also enjoy feasting on sugar canes...and they will take a sugar cane with their trunk and place it on the ground and use their feet to stampede on it to snap it to bite size!!!
Another thing the eles love to eat is palm shoots...or was it banana shoots...anyway it was leafy thing and the eles would grab some with their trunk and sway it left and right vigorously....i thought they were berserk - but these smart eles were just shaking off potential insects before they devour their yummy food.

Around 2pm, the elephants are taken from the 'playground' to the zinc roofed shade where they will spend the rest of the day and night there.
They are given a bath first and then some lunch.
This is Chepor with VTer banditleader tying him up and meanwhile Chepor greets playfully with Gua

Abot and Metopian together with Chepor roam for much of the morning here.
Methopian is a Burmese elephant and is about 20 years old. She came together with 3 other eles who died couple of years back. It was such a tragedy, they slept chained in the open air, and during a thunderstorm a tree came crashing at them.
Abot is younger than Methopian but they seemed to be rather close pals...
Abot is about 10 years old and was found in Johor. Abot is otherwise rather quiet in her actions. She was the one we had the least interactions with.
Chepor - being my favourite, is a young male ele about 4 years old - about the age of Mawar. Chepor was named after the village he was found, a village in Perak.
Unfortunately the two elderly female eles are not best pals with Chepor - they both seems to gang up against him!!!

This is electric compound enclosure which houses the elephants during the day
from 830am to 2pm before they are transferred to the roofed enclosure. Over here the elephants can roam freely, feasting on grass, and having a good rub - scratch - grind! against the tall trees...

Mawar seemed to be extremely attached to the keeper and we even saw her chasing after her keeper who was riding on a motorbike!!!
And here shows a picture of Mawar racing towards our ele man, Banditleader...I think she is also very fond of him!!! vice versa!

Gua was rescued only 4 weeks back - and still has its wild-side...but is slowly adjusting to human touches. He is cautious although quite brave. But when he was angry he snorts and roars a bit. The eyes also shows the same expression.
Gua remained chained and we approached him only with our ele man!!! Gua was very happy with our banana offerings!!!

This is Mawar, she is about 4 years old.
Mawar came to the sanctuary with another elephant who however now is in a zoo in A Farmosa, off Melaka -poor thing - like how banditleader put it in words...she is now a SHOW GIRL!!!

When we reached there we were all required to register and were given some stickers to place on our shirts for identification. We also looked at some displays of ele bones...and also posters giving us some information of the camp activities and some interesting facts on elephants.

My mates from Melbourne were coming up for their ritual holidays to Malaysia. As they are dog lovers and also WWF friends I thought they would enjoy a trip to the one and only elephant orphange...

Have you ever dreamed of actually bathing in a river with a giant Asian elephant. This is what you will get in Kuala Gandah. An elephant sanctuary, the only kind in the world( as claimed by them)...
