you may want to opt ot play with the eles in the water....bring along a t shirt and shorts - and no sunnies and no specs - you may loose them in the dirty river...and never ever find them. the thrill is ride on top and then the ele will triumphantly throw you into the river...people have lots of fun. there is a make shift place to shower - but...

  • feasting on sugar canes

and to my amazement the eles also enjoy feasting on sugar canes...and they will take a sugar cane with their trunk and place it on the ground and use their feet to stampede on it to snap it to bite size!!!Another thing the eles love to eat is palm shoots...or was it banana shoots...anyway it was leafy thing and the eles would grab some with their...

  • eles - lunch time

After the shower they are treated to a big feast of watermelons, apples, carrots, tapioca etc and here is the man chopping up a vege fruit salad!!!

  • eles in the shade

Around 2pm, the elephants are taken from the 'playground' to the zinc roofed shade where they will spend the rest of the day and night there. They are given a bath first and then some lunch. This is Chepor with VTer banditleader tying him up and meanwhile Chepor greets playfully with Gua

And they can be pretty destructive...just look what has become of the years to come the tree will be non existent

  • elephants with Maria

see how close we were with the friend Maria - did the most unwise act...carrying a comb of bananas...and here comes the trunk!!! yikes.....

  • Abot and Methopian

Abot and Metopian together with Chepor roam for much of the morning here. Methopian is a Burmese elephant and is about 20 years old. She came together with 3 other eles who died couple of years back. It was such a tragedy, they slept chained in the open air, and during a thunderstorm a tree came crashing at them.Abot is younger than Methopian but...

  • elephant enclosure

This is electric compound enclosure which houses the elephants during the dayfrom 830am to 2pm before they are transferred to the roofed enclosure. Over here the elephants can roam freely, feasting on grass, and having a good rub - scratch - grind! against the tall trees...

  • Gua having a drink

After eating so much banana treat - it is time to quench the thirst!!! here, our ele man offers water from a bottle....

  • Mawar

Mawar seemed to be extremely attached to the keeper and we even saw her chasing after her keeper who was riding on a motorbike!!! And here shows a picture of Mawar racing towards our ele man, Banditleader...I think she is also very fond of him!!! vice versa!

  • Gua

Gua was rescued only 4 weeks back - and still has its wild-side...but is slowly adjusting to human touches. He is cautious although quite brave. But when he was angry he snorts and roars a bit. The eyes also shows the same expression.Gua remained chained and we approached him only with our ele man!!! Gua was very happy with our banana offerings!!!

    Driving to Kuala Gandah

by bjkhan Written Jul 21, 2005

The best way to go to Kuala Gandah is driving since its located in a wildlife reserve. Take the new east coast highway, exit at Lanchang. Turn right after the toll. Keep on going straight. The road will become smaller and smaller as you get nearer to the centre

    Related to:
    • Jungle and Rain Forest
    • National/State Park
