Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary

by din2x

If you wish to get any information about the elephant Sanctuary, you can go to http://www.wildlife.gov.my/webpagev4_en/bhg_ekogandah.html department of wildlife official website and don't go to myelephants.org and don't even donate anything from that website.Quote from Department of Wildlife's Elephant sanctuary website:"The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) Peninsular Malaysia would like to clarify its stand regarding www.myelephants.org, a website featuring the National Elephant Conservation Centre at Kuala Gandah, Lanchang, Pahang, which comes under the direct jurisdiction of the DWNP. The website, as well as the bank account for donations, have been set up without any affiliation with or consent from the DWNP. The DWNP is fully responsible for the management of elephants in Peninsular Malaysia and thus has the necessary resources to support all elephant conservation...

Pandanus Weaving Centre

by ATXtraveler

During our shore tour from the ship we visited this small weaving centre, which had a single family working on the various gifts and exports of the local plants which are turned into nice little souvenirs. The woman in the picture would dry out these plants, then strip them down using a knive into the proper size strip and then weave it into a hat, slippers, a purse of even a rug like in the picture. The items seemed very reasonable for purchase starting as low as 30 cents USD.

Elephant Sanctuary in Kuala Gandah

by din2x

Elephant sanctuary in Kuala Gandah, Pahang is worth a day trip. It's the closest you can get to elephant, where you can feed them, ride them, bath them, touch etc. And it's quite safe because the elephant that they bring in for visitors are well trained and use to rescued wild elephant that gets in to human area.It is about 1 1/2 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur. You have to wake up early and try to get there before they run out of Activity Permits. Due to the number of visitors, they limits the number of people that can join certain activities with the elephants. the rest of them will be able to see and touch the elephants, nothing more. There is no charge for any visitor at all, no matter if you join the activity or not.The event usually start around 1PM for the video documentary, and you get to see the elephant at around 2PM, and join some of the activities with elephants. it last until...

Visit the Colmar Tropicale

by pres_16

Seeing different architectural designs is one of my favorite things to do during my travels. Like this French-themed resort in Bukit Tinggi, it just gave me a bit of a french experience. I remember roaming around here, it rained hard and the weather was so cool. The mist that came down and blanketed the mountains and everything around was a bonus, it was just a beautiful addition to the beauty of nature in Berjaya Hills Resort.

Fraser's Hill - Bird watching paradise

by SLLiew

Fraser's Hill is a hill station resort just across the border in the State of Pahang. Considered one of the best places to see the most number of bird specifies. You can see lowland to montane birds. It is the location for an annual international bird watching competition. From the Gap, there is are two winding roads, one for going up and one from coming from Fraser's Hill. At the top of Fraser's Hill, the best time for bird watching is the early mornings and late afternoons. There are several popular well marked trails in Fraser's Hills to follow. Or you can drive around with your car windows open. Follow the cries of birds. You will see a "bird wave" where different species and sizes of birds work together in a group flying from trees to trees to catch the different insects covering from trunk, branch and twigs. Any alarmed insects have little chance to escape. Fraser's Hill has a...

Kuala Lipis - Hinterland of Pahang

by SLLiew

Drove to Kuala Lipis on the way north to Kelantan. Kuala Lipis is a riverine town at the confluence Jelai River and Lipis River. So you can go by boat down to Pahang river or in a royal barge back in the past all the Pekan at the coast of South China Sea. The railway line from Gemas in the south to Kota Bharu in the north also passes through the town. The town prewar double storey terraced shop houses are dated in late 19th or early 20th century. There are several nearby limestone caves where Kuala Lipis is the gateway.

Raub - Old gold mining town

by SLLiew

Stayed a few days in Raub for a visit. Historically, this is one of the oldest town in Pahang because gold was found here. Getting to Raub from Fraser's Hills, you will pass through hilly terrains for a scenic drive. There are many rubber plantations and used to have security checkpoints along certain roads.Town residents are mainly Chinese and so no problem to get good Chinese food in local restaurants.Raub is located the strategic eastern end of the road cutting through the Main Range via The Gap and Fraser's Hill from the western end of Kuala Kubu Bahru in Selangor.

Jerantut - Gateway to Taman Negara

by SLLiew

Stayed overnight in Jerantut. It was nearest major town to Kuala Tembeling, the entrance of Taman Negara (National Park). It is a typical small Malaysian town with prewar double storey terraced buildings with shops on the ground floor while residents stay on the top floor. The railway line from Gemas to Kota Bahru passes through the outskirt of town. You can buy some supplies here if you are camping out for a few days in Taman Negara.

Kuantan - State Capital of Pahang

by SLLiew

Driving on the Karak Highway from Kuala Lumpur, Kuantan is at the end of this easterly route that ends on the sea coast of the South China Sea.Visited the famous Cherating Beach and Teluk Chempedak.Kuantan is a great place to buy salted fish and packets of "ready-for-oil-fry" dry crackers of fish, prawn and cuttle fish.Further south of Kuantan is the royal town of Pekan.

Cameron Highlands

by SLLiew

Cameron Highlands is another popular hill resort in Pahang State. The route from Tapah to the top have many turns and should be driven with caution and moderate speed for safety.Although the temperature is no longer as cool as before due to clearing of forests for development, Cameron Highlands is still a nice cool place where strawberries can be grown. There are many places selling pots of flowers, plants and cacti. They all are blooming and thriving but not necessary will continue to grow this same way at your gardens in hotter lower elevations. There is a famous Robinson's Falls and trails but be wary of the famous disappearance story of Englishman Thompson from Bangkok who got lost and was never found.A visit of to one of tea plantation and processing shop is fun. Be wary that the roads on the tea plantation can be damaging to your car. Then a visit to Old Smoke's House for English tea....
