To see animals, walk alone

by SLLiew

The many times I saw wildlife in Taman Negara was when I was walking along in the trails either to fetch water or get away from the noisy crowds. When you are trekking with someone else, you tend to talk or make too much noise together.Have saw wildpigs, gibbons and pheasants scrambling across my path. The first time, I saw a mouse deer, the size of a small dog, I was really exhilarated. We read about Sang Kancil the mousedeer in folk tales who outwitted the crocodile and the tiger in various jungle exploits. So seeing not in a zoo or stuffed up in a museum but in the wild, eye to eye was an unforgettable encounter. Of course, I quickly snapped a picture. But the mousedeer was too fast for me. The picture does show the flash of a mousedeer to prove my point but not clear enough to post here :)

driving during Monsoon Season

by kenari

east coast Peninsula Malaysia is frequently lashed by torrential tropical thunderstorms. As visibility is compromised during a storm, other drivers may have difficulty spotting your car until it is too late. As such, always turn on your headlights and windshield wipers. Reduce speed to give yourself more time to react to hazards and let your speed drop gradually. Never use the brakes suddenly as this may cause the car to skid. Falling tree branches and trunks during storms pose a very real danger that motorists need to be mindful of.

Hiking Mount Tahan - only for fit and trained

by SLLiew

You need to be fit and well prepared training as a team to do the trek to climb Gunung Tahan (Mount Tahan) the highest peak or the 4 Steps Waterfall in Peninsular Malaysia. Need a guide to ensure you do not get lost. Getting injured, you have to hike out or able to get a helicopter rescue and so for safety and enjoyment of the trek, proper planning and physical training is highly recommended to hike as a team.Very often, can food and camera tripod are buried for the return journey as backpack gets heavier as fatigue weighs in after several days of trekking. Many have hiked to Gunung Tahan (5 days) and 4 Steps Waterfall (4 days) but it is much tougher than going up Mount Kinabalu (2 days) for sure.

Blood sucking leeches

by SLLiew

In Taman Negara, during the raining seasons and along river trails, there are leeches that can jump and squeeze into the holes of your shoe strings and suck your blood. It is painless and usually harmless. The leeches get bloated off and falls off. Do not pull the leech out as it cause a tear of your skin and possible infection. Use salt or a lighter, the leech will drop off.The thing is that your blood may run and stain all your socks, shoes and clothes. It is bloody mess and those who are bitten for the first time will scream hysterically. After a few bites, you get used to it. The Orang Asli (aborgines) just flick away the leech when the leech jump onto their bare feet or legs. For us urban dwellers, there is the fortunate leech socks that you wear up to knee height. The leech cannot bite through and just collect in your shoes. Be sure not to be bitten when you remove your shoes and...

Your Expensive Paint Work!!

by muddybok

When you're entering thick forest such as Pahang's National Parks, there will no single sq-inch without scratches on your 4WD hood, roof & sides. If you treasure your expensive 4WD's paint work, then 4-Wheeling is not your kind of sport.Tips: The only place without scratches will be under those decorative stickers.... provided you stick them early. Hahaha!!! Won't help isn't it??!!

Watch out!! Whang!!!

by muddybok

The jungle terrain is changing very quickly during raining season. Some irregular erosion will erode the soils and creating big hole in the middle of the trail. The fast growing ferns will conceal those holes and making the trail even more dangerous. Please take my advice of using harness, helmet and securely tight down your cargo as explain in my "must see" session.

What it comes to rainy season, it could be very dangerous to drive up the hills especially Genting highlands. Quite number of car accident number of years even involved tour coach overturned and landed down the hill. Sands and stone collapsed and the more rain pour the more foggy it is and this may caused difficulties on the roads.
