Taxis ,taxis ,taxis....

If possible , DO NOT take taxis. The majority will overcharge you. If you are driving, it's best to go around on your own and ask for directions. Most Malaysians speak English and Chinese so you don't have to worry.

Taxis here don't charge by the meter and even for a short distance they may charge about RM10 (which may seem cheap after the exchange rate) but it's really too much....

Fun Alternatives: Sad to say, there's no alternative. The best would be to drive on your own but if you can't , well, you'll just have to take the taxis. The bus system is not very convenient and there is no subway system here....

Ipoh's Pomelo girls

Just outside Sam Poh Tong is a row of Pomelo stalls 'manned' exclusively by young girls.

Not only are they pricey, they practiced bait & switch.

Despite my warning, my wife & mother decided to buy a couple from them. Turned out the purchases did not match up to the 'free sample'.

So, be warned!

Unique Suggestions: If you are not local, park your car far away.
Preferably at the open air dirt car park at Sam Poh Tong.

Walk to the stalls (50 m) and just sample the freebies.

As the previous poster recommended, if you decide to part with your $$$ at least you do it with your eyes open and don't count on value for your purchases!

Fun Alternatives: If you really want to buy pomelos the local shops in the city (catering to locals) are better quality & value. We bought some at the provision shop near our hotel for half the price of what we paid at the tourist trap.

Pomelos

On the road out of Ipoh, beside the famous Sam Poh Tong and Lin Seng Caves, you will find a row of roadside stalls selling Tambun Pomelos.

Stop by for the fruits - you'll be swarmed by pretty girls all offering you those fruits.

Strike a bargain, and smile, even if the fruits are overpriced. After all, those girls need to earn some extra cash for their studies ( or what else ? )
.......

Unique Suggestions: If you want the Pomelos, pay and go.

If you want to get a new girlfriend, ask them for their phone numbers !
