The Nasi Kandar shop: Breakfast at Lumut

by cucumbre Updated Mar 15, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

An Indian foodstore. It is one of the earliest eateries to open in the morning. Relatively clean. But flies were hoping to catch us off guard. So we got to 'defend' our foods with our hands.

Favorite Dish: Roti Prata with eggs, served with 2 types of curries. The one that I rarely tasted is the red curry with ikan bilis. Plus a cup of warm Milo. Nice transparent cups.

This restaurant was listed in TripAdvisor and you can even see TripAdvisor logo at the entrance. I would not say that it is very special. I went there after seeing its good review in TripAdvisor and people's blogs.

Overall, it was a little below my expectation in terms of food and service. It was rather expensive too. The place was rather dirty; sticky floor and flies were everywhere. However, it was air-conditioned. Do not expect to be entertained when you walk in as we walked around in the place looking for tables but no one seemed to bother.

The food overall was good but a little pricey. The portion that they served was a little too much for two people.

Favorite Dish: My favourite is the sweet and sour fish maw soup. My least favourite was the stir-fried mix vegetable with bamboo shoots. It had a pungent taste.

We also ate their red wine rice misua. Not bad.

AMU Coconut Villa Seafood Restaurant: Fresh Seafood at a very Reasonable Price

    Steamed clams
    3 more images

They serve all kinds of seafood and their seafood is very fresh. You can even go around the restaurant to have a look. I saw their clams were still alive in the tank.

This place looks like a coffee shop, with ceiling fans or you can also choose to sit in the open air. No ambience at all but good food at a reasonable price.

We would come back again for its fresh seafood.

Favorite Dish: My favourite dish is the steam clams or lala. The clams were steamed to retain its taste and goodness.

The Shops / Hotels at the Waterfront

Lumut is not famed for its food, though fish are plentiful.

People here are more busy involved in catering to the other needs of the tourists, like taxi / bus service and the hotel.

You can get reasonable food from the hotel restaurants, and Indian Muslim restaurants are plenty in town.

There is KFC outlet, and plenty of western food, and pubs for its sizable expatriate population.

Local restaurant: Thai / Kelantan style seafood

by BorneoGrrl Updated Jul 9, 2006

Before you arrive in Lumut town, you will reach a traffic light junction and a monument shaped as a giant shell. If you turn into the junction to Teluk Batik, there is an open air restaurant serving some nice Thai / Kelantan style cooking at a good price.

Favorite Dish: Delicious fried rice, seafood tom yam and fried calamari :)
Order the "keropok" or fish crackers with sweet chilli sauce as an appetiser

    Jook Joint: Good Western Food

by BorneoGrrl Updated Jul 16, 2006
    Jook Joint Lumut

If you've had enough of the usual Indian, Chinese or Malay food, you can opt to go to a pretty good western restaurant, Jook Joint. Don't be surprised if you find 3 restaurants of the same name, even on the same street! This family owned restaurant offers lovely dishes off their menu, all well prepared as if it were from a city like Kuala Lumpur.

I used to come here for my weekly espresso coffee and sandwiches or the occasional steak dinner. They also have a bar that serves a good choice of beer and other liquor drinks while you can watch sports or news on a mounted TV

Overall, it has a good atmosphere for you to relax while dining or drinking. There are also seats outside and plenty of magazines for you to read & idle your time away

Favorite Dish: Espresso coffees and their sandwiches are a nice light meal. The salads, steaks and soups are also good
