Maxwell Hill (Bukit Larut)
One of the oldest hill station established in 1870s by the English, elevation 1,250 meters.
The local Chinese called it "Kopi Sua" or "Coffee Hill" and so when I was young, I imagined there will be coffee powder all the way up the hill.
I have been up to Maxwell Hill many times, by jeep or by walking. Day trip or staying overnight in one of the bungalows up there.
The view is majestic up there to see the whole Larut plain below. There is not much land at the top and every where is a slope up there.
It is a great place to see butterflies and watch birds. At night, it can get foggy and all kinds of moths and insects will gather around the light sources.
Quite a nice hill station.
Bukit Larut (formerly called Maxwell Hill)
Bukit Larut is located about 10 km from Taiping, and is Malaysia's oldest hill station. It preserves the atmosphere of a colonial hill station, with bungalows, gardens, and a cool atmosphere. The hill is accessible by four-wheel drive only. A land rover is available at the foot of the hill. It leaves every hour from 7am to 6pm. Fare: RM$2.50 for adults and RM$1 for children.

1,250 meter above sea-level. The British high-ranking officials used Maxwell Hill as a rest & recreation centre since 1884. It was renamed Bukit Larut in 1979. Before 1948, there was no tarred road and access was mainly by sedan chairs.
This highland had evaded the onslaught of modern development, thanks to the state forestry department, which has complete control over this area. Access is by foot or government-run land-rovers. The rovers are well mantained and the drivers are skillful. Beginning from 7am each day, you can get Land Rover services at the foot of the hill. The service runs once every hour and ends at 6pm.
The scenery is breath-taking. With clear skies, you could even see the straits of malacca. There are many colonial type guest houses and bungalows.
My favourite is 'Speedy Point'. room rate is only RM16(US4) per night. There is a caretaker who also doubles-up as an excellent cook.
Bukit Larut @ Maxwell Hill
Bukit Larut @ Maxwell Hill form the backbone of Taiping. It is the first hill resort established in then Malaya during the British administration.
