Established in 1961, Taiping Zoo is the oldest zoological gardens in Malaysia. It has 34 acres (140,000 m2) of space and exhibits various animals such as amphibians, mammals and reptiles totalling some 1300 animals of 180 species. These include Tigers, Lions, Elephants, Hippopotamus, Giraffes, Hornbills, Orang Utans, Siamang, Deer, Nilgai, Night Heron and many others. It also has a night safari. I saw a 2ft long lizard walking around on the path in front of me and thought it had escaped only to find out that it was actually wild! Also, they have a large collection of primates who have their own separate islands surrounded by water with no fences which is unusual.

    Open: 8.30am-6.30pm daily. Admission: RM12

Taiping Zoo - Not to be missed

Along the highway, you will see advertisements of Taiping Zoo.

It is truly a zoo not to be missed if you are in Taiping. It is the best run zoos in Malaysia besides the National Zoo in Ulu Klang in Kuala Lumpur and the Melaka Zoo.

There is a trolley that drives pass all the major enclosures and slow or stop enough for you take pictures and a close look.

You can also walk to the Snake enclosure. There is an excellent collection of different marmoset (miniature South American monkeys) at the entrance. Do not forgot to look out for the hippopotamus near the surface of a pond.

The local animals of orangutan, gibbons, porcupines, Malayan tigers and elephants and wild hogs are well represented. The African enclosure is a bit pathetic though.

There is also a children's playground and a shop selling ice creams to beat the heat.

Additional charge for camera and video at admission.
