I could not find a direct coach to bring me right to the doorsteps of Cameron Highlands from Larkin Bus Station in Johor Bahru. Instead, the nearest destination where a connecting bus to Cameron Highlands could be made is Tapah. It was an overnight ride starting at 11pm. The SVIP coach ticket cost RM$55. By 6am the next morning, I reached Tapah. The coach let me off along the main road near to a Long distance coach transport company. The bus station to get a ticket to Cameron Highlands was somewhere around. It was too early, the sky was dim and there were not many people around to ask for direction. I had to try my luck in the general direction the bus driver pointed to me just before I disembarked. Fortunately, it was just a 5 minutes walk before I saw this rundown and shabby concrete shelter. It was the bus station. The counter has an information board on bus timings. I got the 8.30am ticket for RM$8 which would bring me to Tanah Rata in Cameron Highlands. A slow 1 hour plus uphill ride the mountains.
Tapah bus station is located a bit further from the town's main road - it is about 100 meter from the main junction of the town where KFC is located.
Take note that not all express buses from KL will stop at this bus station - most of them will just drop the passengers at the bus stop on the main road that links Ipoh and KL. However, the Regal Bus. Co. (that ply the Tapah-Tanah Rata route) and Kurnia Bistari Express (KL-Cameron Highlands) do make a stop here right at the bus station.
The Regal Bus Co. Ltd. Sdn. Bhd. is the only bus that serve the routes between Tapah and Tanah Rata in Cameron Highlands. The timing for the Tapah - Tanah Rata route is as follows:-
8.00am, 9.15am, 10.30am, 11.15am, 1.15pm, 3.00pm, 4.30pm & 6.00pm.
The journey on the long and winding road will take approximately 2 hours, at time make you feel like you are riding a roller coster instead of a bus (a foriegn passenger that took the same bus with me made a gratefull gesture the moment he alighted from the bus in Tanah Rata - thanking God he arrived safely I guess :).
Bear in mind that not all the buses of the Regal Bus Co. is as regal as its name suggest.
Tapah's taxi station is located just accross the street from its bus station.
Apart from serving commuter to and around Tapah, most of the taxi here also go to Cameron Hinglands - its not a suprise as its signbord is sponsored by a hotel in Cameron Highland ;)
If you miss the Regal bus to Cameron Highlands, you may consider taking the cab instead which cost approx RM60/cab.
