Scenic Route by Old Highway 1

by SLLiew

The old highway 1 runs north south through Perak. It is more scenic and toll-free.Of course, it will be slower and harder to drive as there oncoming car and the speed limit is much lower than the PLUS highway. But you will be able to drive by rice fields, villages and stop at all the major towns in Perak like Bagan Serai, Simpang, Kuala Kangsar, Sungei Siput, Chemor, Ipoh, Gopeng, Kampar, Tapah, Bidor and Tanjung Malim. There will a uphill and winding climb between Taiping and Kuala Kangsar and between Kuala Kangsar and Ipoh. You will drive underneath a railway track and there may be several times you have to stop for the train to pass. The time taken may be 6-8 hours from north to south compared to 4-5 hours on highway.

by SLLiew

The easiest way to go around Perak is by PLUS North South Highway. There is a railway line that runs from Parit Buntar (near Penang Border) to Tanjung Malim (near Selangor) with major train stops at Taiping, Kuala Kangsar, Ipoh and Tapah. Strangely there is boat service connecting the different parts of Perak. So the North South Highway is the best route though it is a tolled route. You need to get off the North South Highway if you want to Grik, Pangkor Island or Teluk Intan. There are various rest stops with restaurants, fruit stalls and petrol station on the highway itself and so you do not detour. But Ipoh, Kuala Kangsar and Bidor are close the highway exits for better food. Taiping is about 20 minutes from the highway if you want to take a break at the beautiful Taiping Lake Gardens and...
