Fast boats to Langkawi from Kuala Perlis
by SLLiew
Kuala Perlis-Langkawi is the shortest distance to reach Langkawi from the mainland. There are main sea lanes are Penang-Langkawi, Kuala Kedah (Kedah State)-Langkawi, Satun (Thailand)-Langkawi and Phuket (Thailand)-Langkawi.There is ample parking for cars. There is regular schedule of the boats to Langkawi from Kuala Perlis. Cost RM15 for adults and RM10 for children one-way. Takes about 45 minutes to Kuah Town in Langkawi. Usually it is calm but occasionally it can be a bumpy ride if there is heavy rain and waves.
Railway stations at Padang Besar and Arau
by SLLiew
There is a regular daily train service between Butterworth in Penang State to Arau. There is an international train from Bangkok to Butterowrth that stops in Padang Besar station and Arau station in Perlis. Some will stop at Arau station, then take a taxi to Kuala Perlis to take a boat to Langkawi. There is no train station at Kangar. So you can go there from either Padang Besar or Arau.
Best way to see Perlis by road
by SLLiew
Perlis is one of the smallest state but worth a visit. There are no airport. From Penang, it is easiest to reach Perlis by first going to Alor Setar by the PLUS highway then the trunk road Route 7 to Kangar. From route 7, you can branch off to Kuala Perlis on the west or Arau to the east or continue north to Wang Kelian, Kaki Bukit and Padang Besar.Alternatively you can the PLUS highway to Changlun in Kedah and then an exit to Arau and Kangar. Another trunk road from Jitra in Kedah goes to Arau and Kangar. There is currently some road upgrade and so traffic is slower than usual.
