For every Penangite and even tourists stopping at Balik Pulau, it has been a must to eat the laksa of Balik Pulau or buy some back, otherwise, there will be a lot of non-stop complaining.

Penang Laksa is famous throughout Malaysia. It is a fish based soup with rice noodles, cut onions, pineapples, cucumbers and vegetables with the sourish "asam", and "laksa flower" and "laksa leaves". Prawn paste (hae kor) is added as option and cut hot spicy chilli to taste.

The smell of the laksa soup is enough to get the appetite going for laksa fan. It is an acquired taste and so as a first timer, just get an extra empty bowl and share to try it.

Balik Pulau "Nan Guang" Coffee Shop stall: Famous Balik Pulau "Lemak" Laksa

Again another popular Balik Pulau local dish that attracts local and Malaysian tourists to stop and eat. This stall is at the Nan Guang Coffee Shop next to the Balik Pulau Market and 20 steps from the other famous Balik Pulau Asam Laksa stall.

The "Lemak" or "Siam Laksa" is also fish soup based but more sweet and creamy with "santan" (coconut) and so more curry like.

Most prefer "asam" (sour) laksa, while a few are fans of the less commonly available "lemak" style". So this stall has started selling both "Lemak" and "Asam" laksa while the other stall stays with "Asam".

Which is better? Apple or orange?

Stall outside Balik Pulau Market: Balik Pulau Sugar Can Juice anyone?

After all that hot spicy "laksa", the sugar can juice is great to quench the taste and take away the lingering spiceness.

Fresh sugar can are pulverized to squeeze out the juice. There is difference in price if you want "iced" or "pure". It is naturally sweet and "no sugar added".

You can drink at the stall or ordered it to your tables inside the Market place.
