    Penang's "Komodo dragons"

by SLLiew Written Feb 26, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

See if you can see. Clue: center of picture.

Favorite thing: Unlike their more vicious cousins of Komodo Islands, the monitor lizards of Penang Islands are quite bashful. The local Chinese calls them "Si Kah Chua" or "four legged snakes".

You can often see them crossing the road or dead on the road. Dashing through the bush along a river or in the rubber estate. Surprise to see this one on a rock by the sea at Teluk Bahang. There was a pair.

Have heard that monitor lizards are eaten by some. Cooked with unripe papayas and that is not a myth.

    Fishermen's boat coming home

by SLLiew Written Feb 26, 2007

Favorite thing: It is quite a sight seeing a fishermen's boat coming back home from sea with their catch. There are the visual and verbal communication between the boat and their colleagues on the jetty to get the rope tied to the jetty.

It was a bit shocking to hear the loud and vulgar fishermen's language used to the untrained ears.

Good idea to stay out of the way when the boat lands.

    Catfish anyone?

by SLLiew Written Feb 26, 2007

Favorite thing: Catfish can breathe on land.

We saw this "giant" catfish on the jetty of Teluk Bahang which was caught by a local fisherman on a line.

The whiskers probably gave the fish its kitty name. Beware of the sting of the catfish. It taste quite good though as catfish curry.

    Monkeys along coastal road

by SLLiew Written Feb 26, 2007

Favorite thing: When driving from Tanjung Bungah to Batu Ferringhi, we stopped to see the monkeys. Wild short tail macaques.

Be sure that you park safely and watch for passing traffic as you take some photos and as the children have fun coming close to our distant cousins.

Always remind me that should bring along some "ecologically friendly" food to feed the monkeys as their primary interest in approaching human beings is for "easy food". Fresh fruits and peanuts are good options. Processed food and sodas should not be given.

So always be prepared to stop with a camera and some monkey food.

    High rise seafront condominiums

by SLLiew Written Jan 13, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: There is a great disparity of land and housing price on Penang Island and Mainland Penang. Most people are still rather pay more to live on the island which has more facilities, amenities, cultural centers and infrastructure.

Chinese fengshui believe in that it is best to live in a house on a hill and facing the hill. In the past, only the rich can afford this and so the poor have to wait until in death where many cemetries have their tombstones on hillslope looking into the sea.

Nowadays, there are many high rise seafront condominiums which has this fengshui concept living. Most of these condominiums as well as apartment buildings are built overlooking the sea at Tanjong Bungah and Batu Ferringhi area, the Gold Coast and bridge coastal highway.

But living near the sea, find that the saltish sea breeze acceleratey rusting. A minor price for good fenghsui.

Beaches are public - so enjoy

by SLLiew Written Dec 26, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: In Penang, all the beaches are public.

For example at the Batu Ferringhi beach, although there is a continuous row of beach front hotels with their volley ball courts and lounges set out, the beach itself is open to public.

There are public access to the beaches. Since all the hotels are open to the public for their restaurants or seminar activities, most hotels are tolerant of non-guests parking and using the hotel lobbies to get to the beach.

As hotels will maintain the cleanliness of the beaches at their areas, these are also some of the best spots to layout your towel and soak the sun before you take a dip.
