Most buses in the Butterworth area travel to the ferry along the one main road.
Learn the Malay word for Ferry 'feri" and look for that on the front of the bus above the window.
If you're getting a bus back from the ferry, get someone to write down the name of the town you want to go to. Show the driver the name. Most times it's easier to show him the name rather than trying to say it as accents generally get in the way and make things more confusing. As a general guide, the buses going to wherever you came from generally leave from the same area at the ferry terminal where they dropped you off.
If you want to catch a bus from the side of the road, signal that you want it by waving your arm.
RM 0.80 is the standard fare unless it's a deluxe bus ie one with airconditioning, then it's RM1.
Once you get on the bus, put your money on the tray on top of the machine by the driver, take your ticket and find a seat.
Note: If it's an RM 0.80 bus and you give the driver RM1, you wont get change.
The quickest way to/from Penang is using the ferry. A taxi ride over the bridge can take up to 1 hour during rush hour when the queues are endless.
