As we travelled as a couple we took two lightweight large cases. They were both zip sided cases and one did split on the way home, however we did not lose anything. If you are in the market to buy, consider a hard sided case. They withstand the thrashing they get being thrown around on baggage carts and in transit and are reportedly less easy for people to "tamper with". We took one cabin bag with wheels and handle and a quality back pack as a boarding bag. You can carry 5 kilos each in them. The back pack was invaluable as a daily tote bag to hold shopping etcetera. We both carried gortex jackets to and from the airports. We did not actually wear them on our trip but they did have useful pockets to carry our overflow goods onto the planes.
Our trip occurred in January when the weather is hot. We both took 5 tops each and three "bottoms" for during the day. These were generally jeans or long shorts and t shirt style tops. I did take one loose skirt which was very comfortable. We both took one evening outfit each for clubbing and evenings out. We both also had 2 changes of shoes and one light weight pyjamas. We found 4 changes of underwear sufficient. The total weight came to just under 20 kilos which meant we were able to take home 20 kilos of holiday booty...duty free, t shirts, watches, DVD's the list goes on!! By the way, there is no need to overpack because laundry is exceptionally cheap to have done so use the services provided by the hotels, or ask around when you get there.
As a female, I wasn't going anywhere without my makeup! I cut it back to the barest essentials though and then cut back on the size of containers by using "sample size" plastic containers. Remember hotels provide the basics of toiletries. Do pack leave in hair conditioner. The weather and swimming in pools and the sea are savage on hair so partner and I used heaps daily instead of gel and hairspray which we had left at home. Prescribed medications should be in original packets in a plastic bag in your cabin bag. Consider getting a letter from your Doctor also to cover yourself for drugs you are carrying. Pack a toothbrush and mini toothpaste. A roll on deodorant that stops wetness is great.
I can only really comment on a digital camera but do take sufficient batteries or the camera recharge unit. All cameras are different but I took 950 photos in 2 weeks and changed batteries every 4 days. The memory card must be able to hold all your photos. Or consider taking a second card. It is easier than trying to find an internet cafe where you can download your shots. Portable drives do add additional weight but they are another option.
For the beach or hotel pools pack 2 X Bathers, 2 X sarongs, scuffs or thongs as footwear. Consider a cloth hat. But chances are unless you usually wear one, you won't bother! You will need sunscreen and a good roll on insect repellent. You will be provided with towels for swimming by your hotel. If two people are travelling together, one can carry a good backpack on the plane as cabin bag. It is then very useful to put shopping in during the day while you see the sights. Also handy for carrying bottled water around town.
When you go out for the day, take a back pack. Pack some bottled water , your camera, sunscreen and plenty of tissues because paper is usually not provided in toilets. We also took "wet ones" and anti bacterial handwash. A gel that cleans your hands and doesn't require water. If your hotel is a good one and you have a quality room safe that is bolted down, then leave your passports, tickets and additional credit cards behind. Enjoy your trip and resist the tempation to over pack.

Bring a big rigid suitcase if possible with strong locks (my bag was broken while with Malaysian Airlines)... Try to leave as much space as possible for everything you buy...
Take good walking shoes but also take comfortable thongs/slip ons/sandals.
Take lots of film or memory cards...but if you run out you can always buy more fairly cheaply in Georgetown... Leave a Comment

I travelled with a day pack and it was more than enough. With malaysia things are so cheap you could leave home with your passport and a toothbrush. The less you take the more time you save in transit as you can take your pack as on board luggage ..Walking on and walk out-- no waiting.....also for the female shopper inside us you can bring back more stuff...
Since it is a Islamic country I dressed modest but it actually works in your advantage to cover up from the sun. One pair of cargo style pants one knee length skirt and another ankle length. One long sleeved long waisted baggy indian style top which was perfect for the hot climate keeps of the sun and mozzies. Three polo style tops. One pair of hard wearing walking sandals.Underwear 5 pairs of underdaks and three bra's ,two tight strappy singlet tops that can be used as undergarments also for that layered look under shirts..Board shorts for swimming and singlet style cozzie .. Modest dress really pays off with the locals,it shows respect ,it does not draw attention and people will be more relaxed in being seen talking to you male and female.I also wore my hair tied back.. Take a hat or buy one... Cleaning services are easy to find and CHEAP! Dont waste your time washing things yourself with the humidity you'll find that things don't dry out that fast anyway and will smell like mold when they do..
A great tip from Predhead --' Wet ones wipes' this is a must for the public toilets you will also must take tissue paper as 95% of the bathrooms do not have..But they sell this for 30 sen outside.Take one small pack with you as you never know when you have to go.... Sunblock is a must .Insect repellant also an Insect bite cream with antiseptic properties for example Paraderm which you can use for itchyness sunburn and infection. I didn't have any problems with insects but others did. Toothbrush and paste the usual suspects etc nothing special required..
Take your battery charger with you and an power plug converter then you need not worry about buying batteries which always happens when you least want it too.Langkawi and Penang use the british plug system..Malaysia does has two systems check which that area in which you will be travelling.
Hotels supply beach towels usually in a log in log out system.
Dont take too much honestly ,Malaysian's past time is shopping and eating they say so themselves! it's so cheap save your money buy there. They have great small packs of everything which is great for travellers...

When wet weather (October to February) time will be very quiet at the East coast, so a lot of places are closed. Then visit the Westerly coast of Penang and bring an umbrella, though these are very cheap up there and ... NB: -> don't fill up your suitcase, bag or rucksack!
The preferred attire is light cotton, linen and moisture absorbing but “decent” clothing. In places of worship, shorts and tight revealing attire are taboo. Flip flops and strappy sandals are the most comfortable footwear for walking and sightseeing.

If you don't need to work for a fashion-crew just bring your money and buy in Penang your equipment, films, digital ...
Swim wear, sunglasses and sun block will come in handy for days on the beach. Unless you can afford to launder your clothes daily, don't bother with socks. Some classy establishments in Penang observe a dresscode, so if you plan on dining there, don't leave that designers gown, design suit and Stephane Kelian shoes behind.
