There are only 3 airlines offering direct routes for this sector, to & fro Singapore.
They are Singapore Airlines, Malaysian Airlines and Xiamen Airways.
Xiamen Airways is the cheapest of the 3, with airfare going around S$220 return (circa 2005).

Our flights were all with Malaysian Airlines... Unfortunately we didn't have a very good experience with them on the way over... One of my friends had her bag lost on the way (luckily she got it back later that night) and my bag was broken into...the lock was smashed off and the things inside were all messed up...the zipper was also broken on the suitcase (but Malaysian Airlines have since compensated me for that damage).

Budget Airline like AirAsia is the best way to travel to Penang. You can get cheap ticket on the website and there are also promotional price at certain month that you can fly very cheap. I bought mine at RM45 boarding at Senai Airport( Johor,Malaysia).
So do go into the web and check out the price from time to time, you may get a cheap ticket at about RM$0.99 if you book early.

Penang is easily accessible by air with daily flights from major airports in the country and the region. Malaysia Airlines & Air Asia operates daily flights between Penang and major airports in the country.
The Penang International Airport is about 20km from the city centre. Taxis plying the route follow the coupon system which fares between the airport and various destinations in Penang are fixed.

In both times I have visited Penang(1993-1994),we used the airplane from KL to Penang, flying with Malaysian Airline.
The flight was easy and comfortable.(I can`t seem to remember how much it costs nor how long it took).

Singapore Airlines has (currently) 4 daily flights from Singapore to Penang.
It takes only about 1.5 hours and is a great weekend trip from Singapore.

On arrival at Penang Airport if you have not arranged transport to your hotel you will need to go to the taxi counter and purchase a coupon for your ride.
You cannot just walk out and catch a taxi ..
