More of an Ipoh ( another Malaysian town) specialty than a Penang dish.
Somehow, the key to any good hor fun dish is the kway teow ( rice noodle ). It must be soft and so slippery smooth that it'll slide down your throat without any trouble at all. Now, the ones in Ipoh have that quality so does this little shop in the Jalan Delima Coffee Shop (beside the bean curd store). Yum, yum, the gravy was good as well as it was not too starchy. Definition: Dim Sum is not a dish but a light buffet of dainty dishes consisting of buns ( bao ) , dumplings, rice rolls, congee (rice porridge) and other delicious morsels. Eating dim sum is a breakfast tradition amongst the Penang Chinese.
Honestly, if you haven't eaten tim sum house in Chinatown, you've missed out on one important facet of local Penang life. Many a local Chinese resident here begin their day in the numerous dim sum teahouses in Chinatown - small enclaves where you'll see the hustle and bustle of waiters taking orders, hear the din of Cantonese chatter and smell the scent of tea mingling with aroma of steamed dumplings. There's lots of teahouses in Chinatown but pick the one that is the most crowded. You don't have to read Chinese to order the Chinese, just look at what the others are eating and point! I did just that since I was too sleepy to read and got a delicious crab claw dumpling. It was plump and juicy with crab flesh and pork. Yum.. Bpacker's Dim Sum List Sun Fook Dim Sum House (105 Cintra Street) - 6am - 12pm De Tai Tong Cafe (45 Cintra Street) - 6am to 11am If you're confused over what to order, stick to the usual char siew bao ( roasted meat bun ) , har kow ( prawn dumpling ) and siew mai ( pork dumpling ) , you can't go wrong with classics like this. Definition : Dark herbed broth poured over cooked noodles, garnished with vegetables, and topped with tender pieces of duck slices. Recommended by The Australian (Australia's National Daily Newspaper )
Now if you're a backpacker, chances are you would crash in one of the many pads over here in Love Lane. Yes, the cheesy moniker did come about when rich businessmen kept their mistresses in the hotels over here a long time ago. But other than cheap sleeps, you can get really good Teochew food over here, in a beautifully restored shophouse, no less! The interior of the restaurant looks like an art gallery and an antique store all at once, with pictures, iron wrought lamps and dining tables with sewing machine bases. It's all too easy to get distracted but once you look at the menu, you'll discover lots of good old Teochew ( Southern Chinese) food that were priced reasonably (below Rm10). But instead of recommending all the rich dishes there, I thought it would be good to talk about their simplest dish. The humble duck noodle dish which came with really delicious herb broth and thin, resilient egg noodles. The wait staff told me later that the noodles were specially imported for the dish and were tastier than the local version. How right they were, it was delicious. Cost of the Duck Noodles:Rm3-4 Afternote: I later found out that The Australian also recommended the duck noodles I mentioned! Opening Hours : Do note it's CLOSED on a Monday.Open every other day from 11.30am to 9pm. Leave a Comment

One morning, while eschewing my beloved roti canai, I decided for a Chinese breakfast. I walked around a bit, not knowing what I wanted, and came upon a small 'coffee shop' with delicious looking bun. I ordered one, and a cup of coffee. Both were perfect. In fact, this bun was, no doubt, the best bun I've ever had.
The bun was filled with a sweet pork concoction....the outside was bread-y, but not overly so. And, it was cheap, and a suprise! Leave a Comment Theme: Chinese/Dim SumPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: around Georgetown

Step into Hot Wok and you can tell that it's a special place. Converted from an old bungalow house, Hot Wok is beautifully decorated in charming Nyonya style which is a fusion of traditional Malay and Chinese accents. You'll find old photographs and antique furnishings, all lovingly restored. Take a look at Hot Wok Treasures for photos. The food is absolutely delicious. It reminds me of my childhood days where my grandma would treat us to some Nyonya fare.
My all-time favourite dish is the Assam Prawns which is fresh prawns cooked in a thick tamarind sauce and spices. It's very appetising and yummy. I can't find something as good as this or my grandma's in Kuala Lumpur. The first thing that i will eat whenever I'm at Penang is "Lor Bak" , all that fried greasy stuff is fantastic in the morning, washed it down with a thick cup of "Kopi-O" (coffee black) ! Lor Bak is actually chopped lean pork combined with onion, garlic, and five-spice powder, wrapped in bean curd skin, deep-fried to a browned crisp, and served with a sweet dipping sauce. It's close to Singapore's version of "Ngor Hiang", but Lor Bak is a lot more nicer than the Ngor Hiang. Give me a Lor Bak anytime! As the people in Makansutra would say : Die, Die, Must Try! I have been eating at this coffeshop for the past 15 years, it is still the best Lor Bak stall around Georgetown (but not in Penang). I think the next best stall in Georgetown is at Lorong Selamat. Every time before I go back to S'pore, I will get the owner to pack for me so that I can carry the stuff on a plane!Apparently, I'm not the only one who "Ta Pau" (pack) Lor Bak to S'pore...the owner said that many Singaporean tourists do that too. Operation hour: 7am to 3pm. Closed on Wednesday
I love the fried squid with the eggs still intact. But most of all I love the minced pork sausage wrapped with bean curd skin and deep fried until crispy. It is so aromatically spicy, and the thin, wrinkly bean curd skin is so crispy. No use to tell you Penang offers an exotic mix of excellent, delicious, haute cuisine. Even the street food is truly for the gourmet on Penang island, sensational taste and a high qualified adventure. Street food you can get in the "hawkers" (open air stalls) which you can find anywhere. The food is of great variety.
It would truly be a gastronomic crime if one did not sample the local fare while in Penang. In a word, Penang food is both famous and fabulous! I really got homesick (for my mother-country Indonesia) of just the smells and loved the "Sizzling Yee Mein/Teet Parn Mein". And no stomach aches from the street food !!! My Harper's Bazar director-friend whispered "In my former life I had to be a Javanese ..." and continued >>> ... all you need do is pick and choose! Leave a Comment

Penang well there is alot of food to choose from and it's cheap as chips and there is plenty of variety the only problem is that is it so hot there you can't eat half of what is on offer. So I found a solution - by eating at air conditioned oasis .The Two resturants that where clean, cheap and cool where 1) WONG KOK Kitchen in Prangin mall at the KOMTAR building there you can get great Chinese food including PORK! I had the Duck Noodle soup another day the BBQ pork noodle soup both being 5.90 rinjit and a coke at 2.20 rinjit it was filling and tasty. 2) Swee Bee resturant at 228 Chulia street had roast moist suculent chicken rice set which included choysum it was so good stopped there three times while I explored chinatown area it was under 6 rinjit and the airconditioning was on fullboar very very clean kitchen and shop but tucked away you have to look hard for it!It is past the Infamous Loveland so dont let that put you off. There menu was small but sure it would be hard to beat one of the best meals whilist over in Penang. You know a place is good when you see how packed the tables are on weekends. It's a simple no frills place with good service (waiters dressed in colourful tropical ala Hawaiian shirts) and food that seems more homecooked than restaurant-like.
Their specialty here is the curry fish head which is very appetising, tangy and flavourful. I also like their marmite chicken and nestum prawns.
