If you want to buy DVD's in Penang, go to Prangin Mall. Many shops selling for RM6. For this price they are 'single layer' (not the best quality). One shop on 4th floor has for RM12, 10 if you buy a few, and these are 'double layer', much better quality. If the movie has just come out, or in some cases, not hit the big screen, then there is of course a very good chance that they were filmed in a cinema, hence the heads. However, if the movie is already out on DVD, it will be a copy of that. Of the 96 we bought last year, only a couple had heads, and about 4 stopped mid movie, but at that price, who cares. Anyway just bought this years oscar nominated movies, and all the ones we missed last year. Will add to this post when we've seen the quality.
What to buy: DVD's
What to pay: RM6 -12
If you are buying these in a shop (on the street or in a mall - not a stall here), check the cover. It is nearly always obvious if it is a fake, and if not, the price will probably give it away. Ask someone who works in the shop to play the CD/VCD/DVD on the CD player or tv screen (nearly all shops will have these). Don't feel stupid or embarassed about doing this, it is quite common for people to ask it to be played- you want to check the quality before you purchase something. Make sure the DVD is for the correct region that is suitable for your DVD player at home. Some copied CDs will have bonus tracks, and copied items sometimes have different covers to the original genuine ones. If you cannot find what you are looking for, just ask - they will be happy to help you.
What to buy: You can buy copied items in the night markets, but they are likely to be of a poor quality. Shops generally sell better quality versions, but places like Singapore or KL are better for these things.
What to pay: About 10/15 ringgit for VCD
road side markets.
What to buy: It seems that everywhere you can get the latest movies on DVD even before they come out at the movies. While they are cheap, the quality is generally not that good, and often u can see heads popping up on screen. They can't be legal anywhere else but they are cheap. The other thing to watch is that some may not work when you get back home, even on muilti regional players. This is usually because the disk is faulty.
What to pay: 2-5USD
