Bukit Jambul Country Club (BJCC )is conveniently located below Hotel Equatorial is this golf club which open with much fanfare in 1984. It is 18 hole but generally smaller than most mainland golf courses because of the limited land space.
There other activities like swimming, gym, tennis, squash, snooker and of course restaurant.
Has seen better days but still a great place to swing your club if you are on a business trip to Penang and staying at Hotel Equatorial.
At the Batu Ferringhi beach, at the "Golden Sands Beach", you will find many beach and sea activities being offered.
On the beach there is horse riding, beach scooter, volley ball or just enjoy foot reflexology or body massage. In the sea, there is jet ski and boat sailing. In the air, there is para sailing.
Whatever activities, remember to wear the safety equipment and ask if you are not sure so that you will have a fun and safe experience.
A very popular local activity especially during weekends.
It is a brisk 30 minutes uphill to an outstanding panoramic view. The path is shaded but it can be very crowded during weekend.
There are some refreshment at the top. Parking is free. It is walking distance from Hotel Equatorial.
All over Penang island, there are many jungle trails to hike.
The easiest is at the top of Penang Hill, along the tarred road from the Penang Hill Upper Train station towards Methodist Center. And if you walk beyond there, you will see more wild life like giant squirrels, blue Asian fairy bird and the flying lizard which glides from tree to tree.
You can also see excellent views of Georgetown, Air Itam and Penang Bridge.
Can be hot. So bring a cap and an umbrella if it looks like it going to rain. Fairly flat terrain about 30-50 minutes round trip.
Ok, ok, so Penang is a food haven but if you bother to, this beautiful place also has some challenging, if not beautiful terrain for hiking. Take Ayer Hitam Dam for example. You can hike up to the Dam from Ayer Hitam town if you like and explore the abundunt fruit orchards on the way up the hill. It takes less than half an hour. If you're very fit, see if you can conquer 'Tiger Hill' from the site of the Dam.
And if you're fit AND crazy, take the Penang Hill challenge. There is a footpath located near the Botanical Garden, at the foot of the Hill called the Moongate Trail. Yes, there is literally a Moongate ( see picture ) at Jalan Air Terjun, approximately 300m from the Botanical Gardens entrance. The trek is bloody steep and leads into a footpath. Do carry lots of water with you and even if forget , you'll eventually reach a shed run by a group of volunteer veterans of hill climbing, which serves fresh coffee, tea and biscuits. The journey to the top takes anything between over an hour for the very fit and 3 hours or more for the hopeless lot who don't exercise at all.
It's nice to jog around the Gurney Drive (2km) since the scenary is beautiful and the air salty from sea spray. But don't ever attempt what I foolishly did - try to jog from the E&O Hotel to Gurney Drive (3km) ! The walking path there was almost non-existent and it became dangerous as I had to dodge oncoming cars. But from Gurney drive onwards, it was ok since there was a nice path for strolling. Try to avoid weekend nights as it tends to get crowded. I saw many more Penangite joggers during sundown. Other possible routes include the scenic route at Ayer Hitam Dam and the Botanical Gardens. Do note that the route at the Dam can be challenging as you're fighting gravity over there on the mountainous slopes.
Gurney Drive - Drive to the Esplanade, park at the side and jog along the 2km coastline
Ayer Hitam Dam - Drive to the top and jog around the periphery of the Dam
jet Skiing is one of the most fun activities that you can do in Penang. The water is to brown and scary to even attempt a prolong dip. But if you can find your way onto a jet ski then the water doesn't seem so bad.
Travelling full speed, racing over the waves, getting stung by the salt spray and contending with the scorching sun is bliss. It's an amzing workout. Teying to maintain yourself on the ski rerquires strength. You'll feel like you've just done 100 push up the next day.
Generally jet skiing cost about $60 ringets for 15 minutes. Be nice to the attendants and they may let you go longer. However, 15 minutes at full throttle is sufficent fun.
The hotel beach shuttle brought us to a strectch of beautiful fine sand beach for our water sports.
Enjoy the Jet Ski trip at the beautiful beach of Penang.
Price RM60 for 15 mins for their 700cc new jet ski.
The life vest will be provided so no worries and just have fun jet skiing.
This sport tip is for hill lovers to hike up the Penang Hill and also for bikers to suffer. The sport is very simple, just normal jogging style will do. Needless to bring water containers. We have a halfway stop at 84, there you can have a drink with Ah Keat whom is the CEO of the 84-Department.
When at Batu Ferringi beach, Jet Sking is one of the water sports attraction there. They can be rented easily for around US$15(30 mins)
All along the beaches you will be able to find these rental spots. some of the hotels have their own jet skis, so when checked in, do ask about it.
Equipment: Bring yourself!
Apparently not officially allowed, but if you want to occasionally he passed by for those who wanted a ride!
