Visit a local village
Teluk Bahang (Fisherman village)
The fishing village was within a few minutes walk from our hotel, so we decided to take a stroll around one afternoon. If you walk around one of the local villages, the kids all wave and people just want to speak to you. Walking round gives you an insight into the different cultures and how people live. It was great to see some local life with the fishing boats bringing in the catch. Apparently the End of the World restaurant in the village did great seafood.
NEar Batu Ferringhi, the butterfly farm is an interesting place to visit. Apart from the beatiful butterflies flying free in a covered tropical garden, there is a big exhibition of tropical insects and a big souvenir shop with crafts from all of South East Asia.
Penang Butterfly Farm
The Butterfly Farm at Teluk Bahang village was about a 10minute walk from our hotel. I think it cost less than £1 to get in. There are about 1000 beautiful butterflies, some of them very large, which look as if they are dangling on pieces of gossamer as they dance and float before you. It is quite a strange feeling when you first go in and I found myself ducking out of their way. There was an area where you could wear a stick insect as a brooch and have an experience holding rare Geckos. I must say I passed on that!
The butterfly farm had, well obviously lots of beautiful butterflies. Also there was a lot of other displays of spiders, lizards and other creepy crawlies. Well worth a look and fun for kids.
