Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion: Cheong Fat Tze Mansion~main hall
As you enter the mansion you be at the front lounge where business is conducted.
There is a huge gilded screen which is original, and it is to divide from the private dwelling to the public area. It is very rare guests were allowed beyond the screen.
the screen also acts as a division of the fron house to the end house, breaking the front entrance to the back entracne based on feng shui principle if you have front and back door aligned the money flows in and out quickly.

Interesting also to note the screen can be collapsed and the entire area to be open up during big banquets such as wedding.

There are lots of interesting Chinese straits furniture of Ching period but they are on loan from private owners and some donated...not original to the mansion. After the death of the house master, the family ill managed the large fortune and had even to sell all the furnitures.

Look around for chinese symbols of prosperity such as bats

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion: Chang Fatt Tze Mansion (George Town)
Cheong Fatt Tze (1840-1917), once dubbed "China's Rockefeller" by The New York Times, built a vast commercial empire in Southeast Asia, first in Indonesia, then in Singapore. He came to Penang in 1890 and continued his success, giving some of his spoils to build schools throughout the region. His mansion, where he lived with his eight wives, was built between 1896 and 1904. Inside are lavish adornments--stained glass, crown moldings, gilded wood-carved doors, ceramic ornaments, and seven staircases.

Open for guided tours only Thurs-Fri at 9am (Admission charge)

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion: Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion- stained glass windows
I am highlighting this art nouveau stained glass. It is not entirely original, many were destroyed but whatever remnants were saved and restored to almost its original. The glass pieces are from US duplicates, and coordinated by a Malay glassworker during the restoration pror\gramme in the last 10 years or so.

I like to take note the designs - it being of pineapple design which is very auspicious to the Chinese - with the sound of pinepapple in chinese almost like prosperous coming - befall to you....

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion: Great Example of the Richest Chinese Man's House
If you want to see a fine example of an old Chinese house, this building is one of the great example. The house is very rich in details showing the oriental ornaments.
It is now a museum, an important part of Georgetown's heritage trail, but it is also a boutique hotel so you can stay there too.
I didn't manage to go inside - it's open only for a limited time and you can go in only for the guided tour. I don't remember the cost for the tour, probably about RM10 per person.

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion: Into the blue ....
    Into the blue bayou ...
    Into the blue sea ...
Well, in this case it's into the blue mansion...

Built by Cheong Fatt Tze in the 19th century, this grand mansion is unique and rich in history. During a recent trip home to Penang, I took the opportunity to join their guided tour to see what this mansion is made of. For RM 12.00 (Malaysian Ringgit), we were escorted around by a grand old dame who's very proud of the heritage of the place she's now showing.

Though a lot of her stories centred on how the mansion was built based on feng shui philosophies, I was more fascinated by the architecture and the aura of this ancient "old dame." During the tour, I overheard a couple talking about how spooky it may be to wander here at night.

Incidentally, the Blue Mansion offers homestay and you'll get the opportunity to stay in rooms which differ from each other and with a story all on its own. Prices start at RM 250.00 (Malaysian Ringgit).

Please see travelogue for more pictures of the Blue Mansion.

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion: Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion~courtyard
The house is very interesting inside.

Beyond the large screen, is the main courtyard. We sat around the courtyard admiring the lavishly designed area. With the cast iron structure of Corinthian styled, and mock timber skirting, it has East West designs - Venetian shutters, Gothic louvered windows etc . Much of the materials were from England- even the tiles are Stoke-on Trent and the colour never fades through the years!!!
    .

The area is also built much with feng shui principles. Bear in mind that the original mansion has 38 rooms and 5 courtyards and no dining hall. Apparently they were so spoilt the cooks and housekeepers would run around the large family and keeping up with their orders, eating as when and where they liked to be served. The staff used to live across from the mansion in a row of link houses now a popular north Indian restaurant.

Other worthwhile features noting are the spiral staircase made of iron, the stairs which leads upstairs have 3 steps of concrete before the flight of steps made of wood - has a Chinese meaning that before you take any big step - have it on a firm foorting!!!

Also the house has excellent drainage systems which eventually cools the entire house through underground pipes and hidden pipes on the wall - you may notice on certain part so fhe wall the paint is a darker shade of light blue becos of water pipes.

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion: Living history
The mansion is a wonderful place to see, the guided tour was fascinating. Once inside you can see the cooling blue-indigo walls, beautiful nouveau glass stained windows, all 220 of them, iron cast staircases. The feng shui built mansion is a peaceful place and definately worth the visit.

Guided tours are 12MR per person and are held at 11 am and 3pm
