The Khoo Kongsi is the finest Kongsi in Penang. A Kongsi is a Chinese clan house, part temple & part meeting hall. On the night it was completed the roof caught fire, this was considered as a message from above that they'd overdone the design. It was rebuilt in a less grandiose scale.

The building is full of dragons, statues, painted lamps, coloured tiles & carvings. It shouldn't be missed on a visit to Penang.

The basement

The basement of Leong San Tong has been converted into the Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi Museum. You can see pictures taken back to the early days of Khoo Kongsi, and the history of the place.

Exterior

The elaborate Khoo Kongsi is known as grandest clan temple on the island. The building features a hall embellished with intricate carvings and richly ornamented beams created by Chinese master craftsmen.

Cost: RM 5 $1.25)

Bottom-line: Can make for an interesting 30 minute visit, but should probably be on the lower portion of your "to-do" list.

The main building of the Khoo Kongsi Temple is the most impressive clan temple in Penang. Aside from the intricate roofing, the interior is richly decorated with superb woodcarvings and other temple paraphernalia while the exterior is embellished with colorful lanterns and architectural ornamentations.

Entrance to the temple complex is by a narrow corridor where a colonial-era building on one side is the place to pay for an admission fee of RM 1 per person. Then, you'll see what seems to be an entertainment-purpose building with a wide veranda near the main building of the complex.

The walls of Khoo Kongsi Temple is decorated with deities from Chinese legend. It is beautiful and painted so carefully. The very modest almost black and white mural is a contrast to the rich gold colour of the architectural decorations.

building - Khoo Khongsi

This building is a part of Georgetown Cultural Heritage Trail that should not be missed. It is a very beautiful chinese building, very rich in details and the quality of the crafts is impressive.
This building was built by the Khoo Clan to remember their strong family root. In this building you can find the names of Khoo Clan members who become important people and are spread out not only in Malaysia but to all over the world. Also in another room there are names of male Khoo Clan members who managed to complete their studies and become engineers, accountants, doctors, etc.
This building is now a museum but sometimes the Khoo Clan members use this building to hold a festive gala dinner complete with some entertainment.

This building was originally a bungalow house, but the Khoo clan bought it in the mid 1800s and converted it to an ancestral worship temple....it was named as Leong San Tong - which literally means Dragon Mountain Temple but actually it was named after their village in China.

This hall has two idols representing the Khho clan patron saint, Ong Soon (the noble) and Tai Sai (great duke). both are noted warrios in the Chinese history defending China against the invaders from the north.
