Bangkok Lane is so far the most beautiful street with old heritage houses of Georgetown. The street is near Gurney Drive, go straight on Jalan Concordia, then will see Bangkok Lane on Jalan Kelawei.
On Bangkok Lane, you will expect to see Penang old heritage houses built by Cheah Leong Keah in 1928. Cheah Leong Keah was a local businessman into horse carriage business and rubber planting. He built these colonial houses for his family members. Until today, all the houses are still under the ownership of his descendants.
There are total of 41 units houses. The architectural designs are combination between the East and West. The pillars and the structures are mostly of colonial's influence. The windows and the door are mostly Eurasians' designs and the roofs are typical Southeast Asia's influence. There is a car park space with roof on each side of the houses. My favorite is the large balcony on the second floor with classic doors.
Don't miss Bangkok Lane while visiting Gurney Drive.
We read about Bangkok Street in 'TIME OUT PENANG' Magazine and we enjoyed watching Britain's Ian Wright's visit to Penang on the Discovery Channel's Lonely Planet series. On both sides of Bangkok Street are lovely pre-war residential houses built in 1928 by Cheah Leong Kah. The architect who designed them was Chew Eng Eam, who also designed the Loke Thye Kee. We stopped in to browse at a few boutique shops on both sides of the street. It was a good stroll worth the time to do it.
This cultural village gives a chance of seeing different costumes of Malay Wilayats, Malay Dance, Malay food, and how they perform certain tasks like painting materials.
Ticket: RM35.
Ticket+Dinner: RM65.
Still in the area of around Jalan Burma, Pulau tikus the street parralel to Lorong Burma where the temples are is Lorong Bangkok.
Tourist may not notice this, but there is this row of wonderful architectured link houses. These houses were designed by a famous architect of the affluent Straits Chinese.
worthnoting is the pretty arches, plasters and and also stain glass windows.
