At 830m above sea level, penang hill provides a panoramic view of the island from its peak and is an enchanting place to visit and take in the twinkling lights of Georgetown at dusk, or to simply enjoy the cool refreshing air at the summit.

At the summit of penang hill the famous hoteliers, the Sarkies brothers, opened the Crag Hotel in 1890. It is now a Public Works Department building. The small Bellevue Hotel has a nice garden with an aviary, a good restaurant and the best views of the island.

Taking the hill train on penang hill is great. It takes you 30 minutes to get there.
There are pleasant views of bungalows along the way and pitcher plants growing on the side of the tracks. The first train up leaves the station at Air Itam at 6.30 am and every subsequent half hour.

You must go to the top of Penang Hill to see the views over the island. It is also several degrees cooler up there than at sea level.
The easiest way to get up there is to ride the tram from the bottom. The ride takes a long time, about 30 mins, but is very enjoyable.
It costs only a few ringgit.
The hill is 821 metres high and has some nice gardens that you can wander around.

A slightly cooler getaway when the weather is very hot. On a clear day, it offers a panaromic view of Penang Island from the top of the hill. The top of the hill is easily accessible either by hiking or by the tram service.

Covered with jungle growth and 20 nature trails, the hill is great for trekking. Or you can go to Ayer Hitam, a town in the central part of Penang, and take the Keretapi Bukit Bendera funicular railway to the top. It sends trains up and down the hill every half hour from 6:30am to 10:30pm weekdays and until midnight on weekends, and costs RM4 for adults and RM2 for children. If you prefer to make the trek on foot, go to the "Moon Gate" at the entrance to the Botanical Gardens for a 5.5-kilometer (9-mile), 3-hour hike to the summit.

Penang Hill is the highest point on the island. There is a funicular railway to take you to the top, which lasts about 30mins. Troops of monkeys line the funicular and chase after the cars. Once up at the top, providing there is no haze or rain the view is terrific. There are stalls again along the top of the hill but here you can get hot sweetcorn or banana fritters.
