    This Hindu temple is one of the oldest Hindu temples in Penang, built in 1833. It is dedicated to the Hindu deity Sri Muthu Mariamman, who has a following among south Indians. It contains fascinating sculptured gods and goddesses, amongst them a priceless statue of Lord Subramaniam decorated in gold, diamonds and other precious stones. The temple has a sculptured tower at the entrance measuring 23 feet high and known as a gopuram and inside it are the symbols of the nine planets. The signs of the zodiac are carved in wood on the ceiling.

    The colourful structure

    This typical southern indian style Hindu temple is one of the most important Hindu temples in Penang. Penang's Thaipusam festival begins here. This very colourful temple was built in 1883.

    I expected something bigger and taller before I arrived. So, it's another example of don't have any hope and you won't get disappointed.

    Maha Mariamman Temple on Lebuh Queen and Lebuh Masjid Kapitan Keling is said to be built around 1833, making it th eoldest Hindu Temple in the island.

    It is a major starting point for the procession during Thaipusam. There are many colorful statues on the roof of this important Hindu temple.

    Sri Mariamman Temple was eastablished in 1883. there is large statue of Lord Subramaniam in the temple. The decoration of the temple is very colourful and architecture of the building reflects the those temple in South India.

    Penang’s oldest Hindu temple which was built in 1883, is filled with colourful statues of Hindu deities. Among the priceless possessions of this ornate building is a statue of Lord Subramaniam richly decorated with gold, silver, diamonds and emeralds. During Thaipusam festival, the statue is taken on a chariot procession by Hindu devotees.
