    Sri Maha Mariamman Temple

by Willettsworld Updated Aug 18, 2010

This Hindu temple is one of the oldest Hindu temples in Penang, built in 1833. It is dedicated to the Hindu deity Sri Muthu Mariamman, who has a following among south Indians. It contains fascinating sculptured gods and goddesses, amongst them a priceless statue of Lord Subramaniam decorated in gold, diamonds and other precious stones. The temple has a sculptured tower at the entrance measuring 23 feet high and known as a gopuram and inside it are the symbols of the nine planets. The signs of the zodiac are carved in wood on the ceiling.

    The colourful structure

This typical southern indian style Hindu temple is one of the most important Hindu temples in Penang. Penang's Thaipusam festival begins here. This very colourful temple was built in 1883.

I expected something bigger and taller before I arrived. So, it's another example of don't have any hope and you won't get disappointed.
