Getting to Penang by bus from KL

by phil_uk_net

I used the same company that I used getting from Singapore to KL.Plusliner run normal buses at cheap prices and the more expensive 'NiCE' buses. The NiCe ones only have 24 seats and therefore are extremely roomy. A breakfast is provided but it is Asian style and it was too early in the day for my stomach! There is one rest stop for about 20 minutes. The total journey time is around 5 hours.

2 to travel cheaper

by avenue13a5

I'm planning for a short trip back to Penang on 24th Oct 1855hrs and return 27th Oct'08 2100hrs by flight. Anyone would like to take the same trip? SQ requires 2 to travel for cheaper price of $328 compare to single pax $415. Hope to get some answer before 20th.

Airport to Hotel by Taxi

by SLLiew

For most tourists, the most convenient transport from the airport to your hotel, unfortunately, is only the airport taxi. There is no direct bus service. Most locals have someone to pick them up because the cost of airport taxi is relatively expensive.Inside the airport arrival lobby, you head for the taxi/limousine stand. There you purchase your taxi coupon and pay accordingly to which zone you are travelling too. There is a surchage after midnight. You will be assigned a taxi number and wait for the taxi right at the airport exit. You have the taxi all to yourself and do not share with anyone else. There is no need for tips or other charges. Starting this year, all rear seat passengers also must wear the seat belts.

Sungai Nibong Bus Staion

by SLLiew

This fairly new long distance bus station at Sungai Nibong was to alleviate traffic jam caused by the old long distance bus station at Komtar and bus stopover at Gelugor. On the top floor, there are different counters selling bus tickets to all destinations in Peninsular Malaysia as well as Singapore and Thailand. There are also convenience stores as cafetaria. There is a taxi stand as well as bus services by Rapid Penang to other places in Penang island. Nearby is the Supertanker Hawker Center (10 minutes walk) and the Queensbay Mall (20 minutes walk or by bus Rapid Penang).

Butterworth Bridge

by ATXtraveler

The Butterworth bridge is currently the only mode of transportation for land based vehicles from the Malay mainland and Pulau Pinang. It was opened in 1985, where previous to this, traffic could only come by ferry. The new bridge is currently a toll bridge, however it is only tolled one way (to the island). You are free to leave the island at no charge. The average charge for vehicles is RM25.

The Trishaw

by gnh

For short distances, take the trishaw, the feeling of air on your face and hair is nice, especially in the evenings. Trishaws tend to be found around Penang Road, as that place is full of foreign tourists, esp the backpacker types.

In Penang, there a loads of motorcycles. And they are psycho riders. Visitors renting a car to drive around Penang need to becareful of them because if you're not used to the heavy motorcycle traffic...you could end up in a nasty accident.Alot of backpackers rent a motorcycle to get around. No worries, you'll get used to it in no time :)Penang is a small island...you can do a round island drive in a car in 2 hours (doing about 70km/h average). So a motorcycle is probably the most convenient for parking and getting around.

Taxis always wait for foreign tourists, as they give bigger tips !But for the backpackers, they'll shy away from you.
