    Batu Caves Overview

by machomikemd Updated Jun 14, 2014

Favorite thing: The Batu Cave Complex was discovered by local malaysian chinese in the 1860's and mining was done and harvesting of guano (bat feces) also was done. In the 1890's a local Malaysian Indian named K. Thamboosamy Pillai, built a statue of Lord Murugan (a Hindu Deity) inside the Main Temple Cave and since then, the other structures were built and the area became a large Hindu Place of Worship and a main tourist site. The Large Lord Murugan Statue in Front of the Steps was only Built in 2006. At present, The Hindu Festival of Thaipusam is celebrated here during the month of February as pilgrims and tourists reach 800,000 and more during the festival.

The Complex is composed of three main caves, the Temple Cave, the Ramayana Cave (Art Cave) at ground level and the Dark Cave (beside the Main Temple Cave) and a few smaller ones. The caves are made of limestone and 400 meters long and 100 meters high. There is a 47 Meter Statue of Murugan besides the 272 concrete steep steps going to the Top at the Main Temple Cave and there are many souvenir stalls, religous stalls and local warungs.

There is no entrance fees to the Batu Caves and the site is open 7:00 am to 7:00 pm everyday

Fondest memory: The Batu Caves is one of the Major Hindu Shrines around the world and a major tourist attraction of Malaysia

Batu Caves from Kuala Lumpur Tour or Transport

by machomikemd Written Jun 13, 2014
    to the Batu Caves Entrance

Favorite thing: the Batu Caves is located about 13 kilometers north of the Golden Triangle of Kuala Lumpur (the modern City Center where Petronas Towers are located and also Known as KLCC, while dowtown is around the area of the National Garden and Istana Merdeka ) at the Gombak District near the highway going to the Genting Highlands and Beyond. there are various tour companies that offer half day tours of the Batu Caves couple with Little India and trip to a Batik center for an average price of 90 to 100 RM per person and includes hotel pick up and drop off.

another option will be taking the Public Bus 11 and 11d from KLCC to the Batu Caves from Pudu Raya Bus Terminal then drop off at the Batu Caves. Third Option is via taxis (more expensive).

we had the last option, where we had a private tour van that would deliver us to genting highlands from KLIA from a package tour that does not include the Batu Caves and paid RM 100 for 3 persons for the detour to Batu Caves before going up the Genting Highlands.

Fondest memory: Batu Caves is one of the Main Attractions of Kuala Lumpur.

    Batu Caves Police Stand

by DaHongHua Written May 3, 2013
More police force would be seen during peak season

Favorite thing: Usually there is less police officers on duty unless during religion festival such as Thaipusam day when Batu caves would be crowded by Hindus religion people from all over Malaysia, and the visitors who come here for the event. The police force would added more manpower to ensure everybodies are safe in the event and after the event.

Favorite thing: To visit Batu Caves temple, visitor just have to pay the car parking fee if they are by car. If they are by bus, they are free to walk around unless they want to follow a show which they have to pay according to the entrance to the show. To some temple area, the temple committee put up the donation box that invite and welcome donations.

    The Lord Murugan statue.

Favorite thing: The statue is nearly 43 metres tall. It consists of 250 tonnes of concrete and metall bars, with a layer of 300 litres of gold painting on top.
It was brought in place by means of a helicopter in January 2006.

Fondest memory: Perhaps not the fondest memory, but....after we arrived it started raining. My wife, her brother and his wife were going to make some special prayers inside the cave so there was no other choise but climbing the stairs. I had an umbrella, the others had not but when we came down again and got to the car, I was the wettest of all of us, despite the umbrella. It seemed to gather the water instead of protect me!

    Lord Murugan

by Askla Updated May 26, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Lord Murugan is the God of War in Tamil Hinduism. His weapons are bow and spear.
He is son of Parvati, one of Shiva, the Destroyer's, wives. You mostly see Lord Murugan together with a peacock, which is his mount.
As well as most Hindu gods, he is known by a lot of different names, but Lord Murugan is the most common one.
