Batu Caves actually consists of three main caves and a few smaller ones. The biggest is the Temple Cave with a 100m-high ceiling. On the left side of the stairs is the Dark Cave and at the foot of the steps is the Art Gallery Cave.

The Dark Cave is open for educational or adventure tours and there is an entrance fee. The eight popular rock climbing routes here are the Nyamuk Wall (the newest), the Nanyang Wall, the RoadShow (pumpy start), the Comic Wall (quite dusty), the VolleyBall (smooth lime stone climbs on the left and rough, grey rock on the right), the Damai Wall (great for beginners), the White Wall (with overhangs) and the Red Rocks (reddish limestone).

Some believed this cave was once used by the Chinese as a hiding place from the British and Malayan soldiers during the Emergency Period to evade being captured and imprisoned as communist terrorists.

Light clothing, walking shoes and a torch.
