Another 50+ Steps inside the Temple Cave

after the huffing andf puffing and panting after climbing up the 272 steep steps to the entrance to the temple cave, be prepared to climb another 50 plus steps (more steep and smaller surface area between the steps and they are irregular and not flat like the 272 main steps outside). and they are more slippery as there are many pools of water in some of them as inside the caves, there are water droplets coming down, specially after a downpour.

so be more careful walking and climbing around the steps inside the Main Temple Cave.

    Be Careful of the Monkeys

The monkeys here at the Batu Caves are not wild like on other areas of Malaysia (we were at langkawi and the monkeys there are really pesky) and are relatively tame, they would ask peanuts and bananas from the tourists and pilgrims (and you can buy them at the souvenir stores lining the complex and give to these relatively tame monkeys) but still, be careful of your hats or bag and even food if you are carrying in a bag as these monkeys sometimes do grab these items from people going to the top).

Monkeys are a spoiled bunch here in Batu Caves as Hanuman, the monkey god, if worshipped as a Hindu Deity. There is even a Shrine to Hanuman at the extreme left of the Batu Caves Complex at the Ground Level.

Be Careful When Going Up the Main Steps

by machomikemd Written Jun 13, 2014

the 272 steps going to the Main Temple inside the limestone Cave in Batu Cave is made from concrete but you must be careful when going up and down these steps as they are so narrow and steep and they don't have the typical anti-slip pads installed at the ends of the steps that you can find usually in modern structures.

be doubly careful when going up or down when there is a downpour of rain.

if you have a medical condition like hyperternsion or asthma, do not attempt to go up.

    Monkey business

Some of these monkeys are very aggressive and may attack you when you carry something that might looks like foods to them. Some of the worshippers have problem to bring their offering safely up the stair without being harassed by these monkey.

My advice is, don't feed the monkey!!

    Monkey in the Batu Caves

Inside the caves are some seriously aggressive monkeys that will attack you if you have food. I wouldn't recommend feeding them or taking any type of food into the caves! Don't attract the scary monkeys!
