Nasi lemak, One of our favourite dish

by reezal Updated Jun 16, 2005

Its like Kebab in middle east, pizza in Italy... Msians they enjoy eating Nasi Lemak.

Normal rice cooked in coconut milk (knotted pandanus leaves and even ginger or a stalk of lemon grass may be tossed into the pot to add fragrance), imparting a creamy texture to the grains, nasi lemak is available on almost every street corner and in almost every local-themed restaurant, served with everything from chicken to beef to cuttlefish.

It can be eaten at any time - breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, lunch, tea, dinner, supper, post-boozeup - and the mingling of flavours and textures (creamy, hot & spicy, crunchy, nutty, etc) makes it simply … sheer ambrosia.

    Essential condiments:

    Fried ikan bilis (anchovies)
    Fried peanuts
    Cucumber slices
Wedges of hardboiled egg (variations: fried eggs, or slices of omelette)
Sambal (a kind of cooked chili paste, plain with onions or with ikan bilis too)

WARNING: Very spicy/hot if taken with a lot of sambal.

NL wt sambal, fried anchovies, chicken, cucumber..

    Prohibited Food (Beliefs)

by reezal Written Jun 16, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Malaysia is a country with diverse culture and religion Therefore its important to know the difference in culture and religion when visiting/entertaining Malaysians.

Muslims follow the doctrines of the Quran, which forbids alcohol and pork; while for devout Hindus, beef is prohibited, as the cow is considered to be sacred. Some Buddhists do not take meat altogether.

Therefore, when entertaining Muslim guests, keep in mind to not use pork or lard in the cooking. The safest bet is to buy food items that are labelled “halal” (permissible food items that are prepared accordingly). Also, never serve alcohol to a Muslim. If you plan to visit a Muslim home, do not bring wine.

When entertaining a devout Hindu or Buddhist, prepare meals which do not contain beef. Often times, Hindus practice a strict diet which consists solely of vegetables; so try to prepare a variety of vegetable dishes to complement your spread.

When in doubt, check with guests beforehand on their dietary restrictions. It will be considered as a respectful and considerate gesture.
