by myspices

The Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), is one of the leading institutions in tropical forestry research, both within the country and abroad. It consists of an area of 600-ha and is located in Kepong, Selangor which is about 16 km northwest of Kuala Lumpur and is surrounded by the Bukit Lagong Forest Reserve. FRIM’s ‘forest tour packages’ provide opportunities for outdoor recreation and public education in its grounds. It is a popular spot for picnickers, joggers, cyclers, tourists and nature study groups, for family day events, treasure hunts, camping, birdwatching, jungle trekking and nature photography. The grounds, which began as degraded land in the form of sterile mining pools, scrubby wasteland and barren vegetable farms, long-abandoned, is today a treasure of relatively unpolluted air, cooler temperatures and quiet serenity. There are 5 trails which you can do in FRIM...

Batu Caves is a series of steps up the limestome hill to two major caves, the light and the dark caves. There is a gigantic Hindu diety statue at the entrance of Batu Caves.During Thaipusam festival in February, the place is very crowded with devotees with piercings and carrying kavadis to fulfil their vows to Hindu dieties, going up the steps to the shrines inside the caves. So if you want to see this festivity, you will need to coincide your visit on Thaipusam day.

Klang

by SLLiew

Klang is located between KL and Port Kelang. It is famous for "Bak Kut Teh" or "Medicated Pork Soup" which usually eaten with rice. The town itself is bisected by the river and the highway and I found it difficult to drive around. Actually we were taken by a local to an excellent Chinese restaurant. Apparently there are many excellent Chinese restaurants in this town.

Boat trip to Pulau Ketam

by SLLiew

This is a fun day trip by boat ferry from Port Kelang to Pulau Ketam.Pulau Ketam means "Crab Island". There is an entire fishing village with school, etc built on stilts. But the seafood is not cheap with so many tourists coming here.It can be very hot, so drink a lot or wear a hat or carry an umbrella.A slow pace of life compared to KL.

Blue Mosque

by chiabh

Shah Alam is most famous for the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque (popularly known as the Blue Mosque as its name is a mouthful for foreigners)... It is named after the late Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz... It is said to be the largest mosque in Malaysia and one of the largest in Southeast Asia. It has a large 350 ft high blue and white dome. The mosque has four minarets erected at the corners and is the only mosque that has four minarets in Malaysia. The mosque was opened in March 1988 and was commissioned by the late Sultan when declaring Shah Alam as the new capital of Selangor on February 14, 1974. Construction of the mosque was completed on March 11, 1988. The mosque can accommodate some 20,000 worshippers at one time. The mosque can be seen from the air as one comes in to land at the old Subang Airport... a view that i always appreciate when I flew into Subang in the old days...

Batu Caves

by yatingchen

Batu caves is Hindu saint place. Hindu festival, "thaipusam" takes place there at the end of January or in the beginning of February in year. What catches your eyes at first is the golden statue that watches the caves. One has to climb around 300 steps up to the cave entrance. In the caves there are several Hindu temples and live monkeys and roosters. Unfortunately it smells really bad, but it's still interesting to see the saint place.

The "Blue Mosque" of Shah Alam

by SLLiew

Located in Shah Alam, the capital of Selangor, the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque can accommodate 24,000 worshippers. It is one of the largest mosques in Malaysia and some of the tallest minarets and dome. The outside garden ponds reflect this distinctive Kelantanese style mosque with its beautiful blue color theme. We parked our car and wondered through the garden and enjoying the view of the mosque. You cannot miss the mosque when you are in Shah Alam. From the Federal Express Highway from Kuala Lumpur to Shah Alam, it is on your right and you will soon see the mosque.
