Casuarina fringed beaches

by SLLiew

Along the coastline of Terengganu, I enjoyed the tall elegant casuarina trees. We are often used to coconut tree fringed beaches but casuarinas which are natives to Southeast Asia and Pacific Ocean area. Casuarina can grow up to over 30 meters high. They are like tropical coastline pine trees with cone fruits and lone pine scaly leaves. The roots of these trees can hold the sand together and grow well despite the poor nutrient of the sandy soil below. Many planted casuarinas provide excellent shade on the beach but beware if you walking bare footed to not step on the fallen "needles leaves" and "cones fruits".

Turtle Watching in the yester years.

by SLLiew

In the good old days, at Rantau Panjang beach, on a clear moon light night, one is assured to see a landing of the giant leatherback turtle. All the tourists waited until a signal was given. We all rushed, running along the beach and that suddenly saw this giant ancient creature, larger than life, working its way up the beach to lay its eggs. Unfortunately with all the lights, cameras and noise, the turtle eventually just turned back to sea. Some tourists even try to sit on the turtle's back to get another picture. The "man-in-charge" used his feet to hold back the turtle until everyone had a good look and taken enough camera clicks for their value of money. Eventually the turtle reached the waves probably hoping to return to land again another time to lay its eggs. Another batch of tourists would be waiting. Now the turtles are no longer seen landing. Perhaps on a blue moon.

Negeri Terengganu, Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu???

by PS_Lee81

Fyi...This is a page briefly about Negeri Terengganu. Negeri Terengganu means Terengganu State in English (Negeri = State). Sometime i will use only Terengganu instead of Negeri Terengganu. It referes to the same thing. Whereas Kuala Teregganu is the capital town of the Negeri Terengganu (Terengganu State). Short form for Kuala Terengganu will be simply K.T. I'd also created a travel page on Kuala Terengganu (K.T.) for a more details about this town.If you only wanted to know the brief about the states, go to my Negeri Terengganu page; and if you wanted to know detailed about the capital town of Negeri Terengganu, go to my Kuala Terengganu page.

by road from KL, this is the border

by harish_mikael

This is the state border between Pahang state and Terengganu state. If you drive thru the coastal road from Kuantan, Pahang, you will pass by the scenic coconut-filled village along the way and you can even see the beach near the main road. One of popular village here is Cherating, home to one of the earliest Club Med in Asia.

Bringing children to waterfalls for swimming

by victorwkf

Like in other waterfalls in Malaysia, it is safe to bring along children to swim at the waterfalls in Terengganu as long as they swim in the shallow pools and parents keep an eye on them. In fact, you will see many locals bringing their children here, and the children really enjoy the outdoor environment. There are stores at the entrance of the waterfalls selling colourful floats for children as well :)

The local dances of Trengganu are very graceful and colourful, depicting the traditional, believes and the tropical environment. Do catch one of these performances if you are in Trengganu and you will enjoy it.

Water Buffalo

by Wild_Orchid

I liked the water buffalo here. They were an imposing shade of gray black and had a set of long curvy horns. Used by locals in paddy plantations, they are native but relatively rare these days due to the introduction of machines to till the earth.Catch a sight of them while you still can!

growth is possible, even in a poluted drain

by Wild_Orchid

Near the apartment where we stayed, there was a large drain ("Longkang" in Malay). The water there was pretty murky, but amidst the murkiness were these beautiful giant lotus plant-the flowers were among the biggest I have ever seen! It would bloom every morning and close in the afternoons. This shows me that beautiful things can survive and even thrive in adverse conditions.Simply beautiful!
