From Kuala Lumpur you can take either MAS or Airasia to Sultan Mahmud Airport, Kuala Terengganu. Travel with comfort with MAS...cost around MYR550 (to n fro), or you can choose the budget airlines Airasia...cost around MYR300 to n fro. Flights from Kuala Lumpur to KT is just around 1 hour.

Not much more than a runway and a tower, the rustic KT airport is your likely arrival point in the Kuala Terengganu area.
There are a few tourist stalls here where you can arrange transport and/or accomodations at Pulau Redang if need be...

Some of you might have heard that I spend quite sizable amount to maintain this car and the consumption of gas may be beyond average Malaysian cars. But this car nonetheless is a reliable car to travel almost 1,600KM in 5 days time (with 2.5days resting at Kuala Besut Jetty parking lot.
This old faithful of mine travel almost every significant roads of Peninsular Malaysia (be it Road #1, #5, #2 and all that). This car however not yet crosses the old East-West Highway that connecting Jeli-Gerik & Gua Musang way.

There are few bus companies that ply the Kuala Lumpur-Kuala Terengganu route, one of them is the Konsortium Bus Express which I took on my last trip to KT.

Taking the beca (trishaw) to move around Kuala Terengganu town is a good alternative if you don't want to walk.

The Kuala Terengganu Express coach Station is located on Jalan Bandar, next to the Astaka Shopping Centre. From the express coach station, it is almost walking distance to most of Kuala Terengganu's attractions.

As Kuala Terengganu is a riverine town, travelling by boat is still a common things here. Most of the locals use the boat to cross the two river banks. The journey by boat will normally takes about 10mins, costing RM0.80 one way.

The Inter State Coach Station in Kuala Terengganu is located on Jalan Tok Yam.

For now my tips will be on getting here from JB and SG.
Transnational is one of the coach that comes here from Singapore and will stop at JB.
Ticket price and travel time (roughly):
JB - KT RM33 [8-9 hours]
SG - KT S$30 [10-11 hours]
