Conservative State

by SLLiew

Terengganu is predominantly Malay Muslims and so it is considerably amongst the most conservative states in Malaysia. So unlike in KL, Penang or Johor, you may want to be dressed more conservatively and avoid public show of affection when you are in Kuala Terengganu or the smaller coastal towns and villages to respect the locals. On the islands, of course, beach wear is fine but topless sunbathing is a big no no.You will see more conservative dressing amongst the locals. Drinking pubs and trendy dancing clubs are best to be sought in KL and Penang but golden sand palm finged beaches, colorful boat building villages and bright starry nights are the best in Terengganu.

Cover-up~please!

by Wild_Orchid

Around the state of Terengganu and especially in towns such as Cukai/Kemanan, you will see billboards in public places which encourage female muslims to please cover up when they go out of the house. It serves as a reminder that in an islamic state such as this one, there are cultural norms and differences here to be observed. Please be aware that some Muslim women will not shake hands and if in doubt, you may wish to just nod and smile instead. The Malaysian Federal Government led by our Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi encourages a moderate form of Islamic practices. Despite the need to be somewhat conservative in dressing, the women here are simliar to other women in Malaysia and the world-they do own property, are out in the workforce, some have their own small businesses and they do drive cars. What can I say: a woman's work is never done!
