kayak

As Gemia is such a diddy island, there are plenty of ways to get across to Kapas island. One of them is a kayak. these are easily rented by the hour, and can be used to go to turtle beach or simply to go around the island and explore. Should you need a lifejacket, these are also issued for no extra charge. I found that sometimes i just wanted to get away, and the beaches on kapas have other restaurants, and a change was often nice. There are some very secluded beaches on kapas which are also nice. The one beach you can see from the water villas has got a resident porcupine fish, which is cool to see sometimes. NOTE: these were bigger than i expected lol, so dont be shocked. I saw them at night more than during the day though....

Banana boating

Banana boating is one of the most fun things you can do on the water, especially with a group of friends. Its priced per person, per half hour and is done by either Roni or his colleague. Roni himself has great english and will guide you through the whole thing. Everyone gets given a lifevest and if you're a little afraid he can take it slower for you...But beware, you will get wet!! Big amount of giggles, i never knew anyone who didnt have a great time on this.

Baby Turtles swimming

As an avid turtle lover, i believe that when a person visits the island, they do so partly because of its reputation of being a conservation island. The turtles around the world are now highly endangered, especially the Giant leatherback turtle, the olive ridley and the Hawksbill, which are now rarely seen, especially next to the Green Turtle, although the latter is also endangered.

I used to find that i used to be able to watch them swimming and playing around with each other for ages, especially after i had given them their morning fish. I found after much watching that they each had indivual characteristics, and i was often very sad, but happy at the same time each time we released the babies into the sea....

Gemia is home to the Green turtle, and mothers come and lay their eggs in the vicinity which are then taken care of by Gemia staff for a short period of time, before being released into the ocean once they have grown a little larger. These small turtles can easily be seen swimming in the cage next to the Jetty approaching the island.

These baby turtles in the wild have a 1% sucess rate in reaching adulthood, so keeping the most alive possible is best available way of conserving them, therefor, as a guest to the island, please notify staff (notably Encik Rani from Recreation) if you see a crab clinging to the cage, as these eat many young turtles much to our grief.

Scuba diving around Gemia can be one of the best things you can do. With a trained dive master situated right at the hotel in the form of mr leow leo, or Leo for short, you can have an introduction to scuba diving if you've never been, or continue to appreciate the underwater world under his supervision. He taught me himself, through numerous dives and made sure i was always comfortable when i was diving.

The spa is one of the things which comes highly recomended by people who visit the island. Its one of the cheapest Spa's in malaysia due to the fact it's very new. However the treatments available are first class.

A variety of different massages are available as well as other treatments by skilled thai attendants.

Gem Island is one of the few places in the world where guests at the hotel pay for the conservation fund, and fund the turtle conservation program.
