either you're a good swimmer or you don't even know how to put a snorkeling mask on, just go for it.. it is so much fun. you can book a trip with your chalet operator.. as for me, i would like to suggest lemongras snorkeling guide. a friendly local guy with a new & bigger boat (fyi, when i was there-june07, he's still operating with a small boat). 5 different spots for 5 hours including a lunch stop at a fishermans village & swimming at romantic beach is really awesome!!

Even if you dive in Perhentian Islands, plan 1 day for the snorkeling tour. You won't see the same as with scuba diving.
There are plenty of boats offering some snorkeling tours and they all do pretty much the same. I always did the one with Jeffrey, starting from Coral Bay, as his boat is usually less crowded than the ones from Long Beach.
He usually starts around 10am from Mama's Kitchen and stops at:
* Turtle Bay - big turtles
* Shark Point - small sharks
* Coral Garden - plenty of colourful small fishes
* Lighthouse - lots of corals and Nemo
* Romantic Beach
* ...
You will also stop at the fishing village to have lunch.
To arrange for the trip with Jeffrey, just tell him the day before. You will find him at Mama's Kitchen at the end of the day or during the diner. It is something like RM30 for the tour + RM10 to rent mask, snorkel and fins and it does not include the lunch at the fishing village. The boat is usually back between 3pm and 4pm depending on the time you spend in the water!!!

Address: Start from Coral Bay
Located in the middle of a marine park, Perhentian Islands offers great dive sites
The minimum PADI level will be enough for most of the dive sites in Perhentian. There are plenty of sites but the most popular (and probably the most interesting) ones are:
* Temple of the sea
* The Vietnamese wreck
* D' Lagoon
* The Light House (from Coral Bay)
* ...
One dive usually cost between RM 70 and 100.

Address: Dive shops on the beach
If you stay more than 3 days on the islands and if you are interested: Pass your PADI. The first level gives you the ability to dive down to 18 meters under water.
There are plenty of dive shops on the beach. The price is definitely cheap compare to other places in the world. It was around RM 700, 2 years ago. Also, if you do an introduction dive (to check if you enjoy or not - to be taken into consideration) and then decide to go for the PADI, you get the introduction for free.
The PADI usually takes 3 days to be completed:
* Day 1: Theory and Questionnaire (you have to read a book and answer some questions)
* Day 2 and 3: You have to do many dives with the Dive Master.

Located on the west side of the island, Coral Bay is the only place in Perhentian Islands from where you can watch the sunset.
Make sure to be there before 7pm and be on time as the sunset does not wait... And as we are close to the Equator, the sunset does not last very long.

On Perhentian Kecil there's 2 main beaches... One is called the Long Beach (most popular) and I dont know the name of the other beach which I'm staying on :p...
However, you can walk through the forest and you'll get to the other side of the island.. The 2 beaches are totally different... The water on one side is very calm while the other is very rough.. I think the Long Beach is facing the South China Sea that's why the waves are very rough...
While jungle trekking, you'll see many chalets are on construction... They are building more and more chalets so I assume Perhentian will be congested with tourists in few years time..
You'll get to see some interesting colourful birds and huge komodo dragon!

Snorkelling is the best during hot weather as the water will be very clear and you get to see more fishes and corals..
When i was there, it was raining in the morning so when we went to snorkel, the water was abit murky and couldn't see much.. Very disappointing...
However, we managed to have 1 day of good weather and we saw turtle, sting ray, clown fishes and many other colourful ones...
We went to the following snorkelling points:
1. Turtle point: Saw 2 turtles..
2. Shark point: No luck.. Didn't see any sharks..
3. Lighthouse: Sting Ray, Nice corals and fishes --> Must go in good weather cos there's abundant of underwater life here!

I meant to take a picture of the kitty, but this guy in the picture as well... and he has no sandels with him... so i would like to talk about sandels here.
when i was here during a few days i had sandel on, but it the same, the sand still stick on my feet and i have to clean it each time i walk into my chalet... therefore, since i notice not many people wearing the sandels and i feel a bit troublesome, so i walk around the island without sandals... and it convinient when i did that.... same thing if i am wearing it and not wearing it, still i have to wash my feet from the sand.
