SABAH - Mount Kinabalu, 4101 m...
  • Tip Rating:
  • SABAH - Mount Kinabalu, 4101 m above sea-level! The whole state in Eastern Malaysia (on the island called Borneo) is very much off the beaten track. Mt. Kinabalu is the highest summit between northern Myanmar and Irian Jaya and can be easily climbed within 2 days! Go and see my extensive travelogues about what to see and do in Sabah! You will like it, that's for sure!

Sometimes the road ends, and you have to hop onto the ferry.

This one over the Rejang River, takes in cars and lorries.

Only problem, the waiting can be quite long during rush hour

The new bridge should be complete in another year
    ( 2006 ).

    Encounters with fireflies and...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Encounters with fireflies and whitewater rafting along the Selangor River

Selangor River provides something of a different nature for a traveller to Malaysia. At Kuala Selangor, near the estuary of the river, is the place where one can come in close encounters with fireflies. These fireflies colonise the berembang trees along the river bank, and are such a fascinating sight as you drift quietly down the river in a paddle boat and marvel at these glittering lights on the trees !

Upstream near Kuala Kubu, the roaring river provides perfect setting for whitewater rafting. The run takes about 2 hours and contains at least 10 sets of rapids ranging from grade 2.5 to a short grade 5 for a rush of adrenaline.

Don't miss the whitewater rafting if you are in Selangor. Strangely, this is never mentioned even in Lonely Planets !! The last time we were there, a dam
was being constructed. I don't know how long would it be before the river is closed for whitewater rafting. Go while it is still there !

For rafting guide, I would highly recommend Tracks Outdoor. They are fun and very professional !

    Bako National Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the state of Sarawak, north of Kuching, this national park is one of the most beautiful and amazing regions i've ever been to. One of the few places in the world where rain forest meets the ocean. A seven hour marked trail (bring plenty of water!!!) leads you through some of the typical vegetations of the park. Swamps, verdant rain forest, savannah and picturesque coastline with deserted white-sand beaches. You're likely to see proboscis monkeys and lizards on the way.

    Last visit : May 1995

    Try the East Coast

The east coast of peninsular Malaysia is a best kept secret. The beaches are beautiful and almost empty. My favorite place was the Marang Resort and Safaris. The bugalow was 180 ringgit (~$45) for 3 people on the river side but the beach was just over the sand dune. You can play in the ocean, catch fish off your porch or take a boat to Pulau Kapas to snorkel in a marine park.

    Drunkard camping trip @Port Dickson
  • Tip Rating:
  • Beside Mark, my worst influent in life is the guy by the name Ryan Anderson (the guy having chicken rice ball). Two of us often escape to some quite beach & overly intoxicated with alcohol stuffs.

This particular trip, we had 1 dozen of beers from cans & bottles before we finish another bottle of Absolut Vodka (75cl) & fell flat sleeping until pass noon.

    Sungai Rompin
  • Tip Rating:
  • We are camping next to Sungai Rompin for near to water reason. Those trucks still parked at our previous night camping site.

These trucks not just great for off-road, they are also good for flatten the bushes to make camp site. Bushes will grow back very rapidly. The whole trail will be reclaiming in no time, should 4-wheelers stop visit for more than 3 months.

    Sungai Marang
  • Tip Rating:
  • Marang is a picturesque fishing village located where the Sungai Marang (Marang River) runs into the ocean. Climb the tower in the small park and get a good view. You can get good food in the market, just pick a place that serves Halal food. Marang Resort and Safaris is 2 km. south.

    Endau Ghost

    Fish Skeleton on Porch Ceiling

My porch (picture on the right) at the Endau Beach Resort had a ghost. One of my friends is sensitive to such things. When she came to knock on the door of my room, she felt something brush her hair and screamed. When we ran outside, we saw nothing until we looked up. Someone had put a fish skeleton on the ceiling of the porch (picture on the left). We did not know what it meant but something was different there. Was the skeleton to keep the ghost away?

Camped by some riverside (Pedu, Kedah)
  • Tip Rating:
  • We pitch our camps at one of the small rivers off Pedu main lake. According to my friend, we could have just entered into Thailand border. Whatever it is, no immigration officers are there to stamp our passport. We don't ever bring the passport with us in the first place.

We basically just camp on the riverbed, trap some small animal & fishes. These guys are very creative of using natural resources for basic needs. Some sort of survival skills in jungle kind of thing.
