Not to miss the Kuala Selangor...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Not to miss the Kuala Selangor Fireflies. There are two places for this activity which are Kampung Kuantan and Bukit Belimbing. Kg Kuantan is using a rowing boat whereas Bkt Belimbing is using a battery generated motor boat. Personally I prefer the Kg Kuantan for various reason. 1st and foremost, not so commercialise. 2ndly, the boat man can bring you nearer to the fireflies. There are rumours saying you could not bring camera or you can't talk loud where I've confirmed with the boat man during my trip to Kg. Kuantan is not true. The fact is most camera is equipped with automatic flash, as a result the picture will not be able to come out like what you expected. And for the fact you cannot talk loud is not true too since the boat man said if you want, you can sing out loud !! Ensure your voice wont cause VOICE POLLUTION to the peaceful nature :) hehe And if you enjoy nature, may be you could spend a day at Kuala Selangor Nature Park which is run by the Malaysia Nature Society (MNS). Accommodation is available. It is a bird sanctuary where you could find seasonal birds here. My first experience, and probably the last as well hehe :) trek in mangrove forest is memorable. Should try it if you have not yet done crazy activity like this. The park ranger said the mangrove mud is good for facial. If you want to look more beautiful, perhaps you should give it a try :) Honestly, I can't stand the smell of the mud. But if you have not do anything like this before, why not?

If you've ever taken a road trip to the North, no doubt you would have noticed (or been awed, like me) by the sight of LATA KINJANG, a towering waterfall that is visible from the North-South Highway on the route from KL towards Ipoh. Access is a little tricky, and was in fact the greatest barrier preventing us from checking it out. All that changed last Saturday when we finally made it there :) more tips in a bit...

The city of Bintulu - there is...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The city of Bintulu - there is not actually much in Bintulu BUT it is in the Guiness Book of Records. Out of all the cities in the world, Bintulu's airport is the closest to the city center. It really is just across the road from the terminal - very strange. I was travelling at the same time as a Swedish guy and he obviously didn't know this fact and ended up getting in a taxi outside the airport and said to the driver 'Please take me to the city center' and so the driver did as he was told and drove him to the other side of the road:)

    According to this article,...
  • Tip Rating:
  • According to this article, there are two theories to the origin of the Peranakan culture of Baba and Nyonya. (Baba refers to the male and nyonya refers to the female). The romantic theory to this is the one where the Princess Hang Li Poh married the Sultan Mansor Shah or Malacca. She was said to come with an entourage of 500 youths who later settled in Bukit Cina and later married the local women there. Their children are the Babas and Nyonyas that we refer to today. The other theory is that the Babas and Nyonyas were descendants of Chinese traders who married the locl womenfolk of Malacca and the surrounding areas. The nyonyas dresses a lot of like the Malays. From the 1920's, they wore the baju panjang. The younger Nyonyas however preferred a shorter outfit called 'Phuah T'ng Tay' meaning half long, half short). They also wear beaded shoes called 'manek ay' to match their clothes. One of the favourite Nyonya's leisure activity is beading slipper tops to be presented as part of her wedding dowry to her groom and future-in-laws. Apart from beaded slipper, they are also skilled in producing beaded belts, purses, spectacle cases, miniature vases and comb holders. The 1940's saw the introduction of the Kebaya Sulam (embroided kebaya), some sewn by the Nyonya herself. This is usually work together with the 'keronsang', a kind of brooch which are pinned in the center of the blouse. The Nyonyas also sports a 'sanggul talipon' or telephone hairbuns. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, the Kebaya Sulam became more elaborate with more embroidery and cut-through lacework called 'Tee Too Bang' or Spider Web'. The Babas however wears something in the style of Dr Sun Yat Sen, called 'Choong San Chong'. It had multi-pockers jacket with a high Mandarin collar fastened with gold studs and ivory buttons worn with baggy wrap around pants and a topee hat. Their outfit, unlike their womenfolk, does not resemble the Malay outfit very much. The Nyonyas those days also like to chew the 'sireh'. First, the leaves are wiped clean and then buttered with a dab of lime paste before pinches of shredded areca nut, gambier and tobacco were added. They then chew on this. It tastes a little bitter and spicy too

    Malaysia was under Colonial...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Malaysia was under Colonial rule for many, many years and as such our old buildings reflect the influence of British architecture. This can be seen mainly in Penang. The architecture in Malaysia is very varied, ranging from very old colonial buildings to very modern highrise buildings. If you travel along the country-side, you will see a lot of Malay houses. They are mainly seen in villages or 'kampong' in Bahasa Malaysia. Notice that they are built with stilts below and they have large windows. This is mainly to keep the building cool and the stilts elevate the building to keep them away from floods. Kampong houses are detached houses and they usually have no fences around them.

    Lake Chini
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lake Chini is one of my favourite short vacation spot. The place is in the middle of big jungle at least 50kms away from any towns, surrounded only by nature. There has 2 or 3 guesthouses and Rajan Jones is my choice. RJ charge a mere RM18 per day including (everything). You only have to pay RM18 to enjoy a day of foods, stay and sighetseeing, etc.

    Maran of Pahang
  • Tip Rating:
  • Maran of Pahang is definitely a OTBP location to be visited. This is not Maran town but is the surroundings of Maran in the Pahang River area. Drive along the river Pahang to capture some of the breathtaking views of old villages and nature sceneries. The road is long, quiet, no cars. A place for absolute photography.
