Eat with Snakes above you!

by neamman

In Penang there is a hotel on the top of Penang Hill which has a Restaurant which specializes in Hot pot. We werer there with my inlaws and after eating I went out with my sons to enjoy the breeze and view. After 10 minutes the owner asked me if i noticed anything which i had not. He them pointed out the canopy of the veranda was crawling with hagman's vipers a poisonous snake found in penang snake temple. Luckily they are very non agressive and will only bite if really provoked. The snakes previously sometimes fell on diners which gave people near heart attacks. Nowdays he has a wire mesh to prevent the snakes falling. He doesnt try to get rid of them as they keep rats and mice down. Needless to say I would never stay at that hotel!! But I have great videos of my kids and their cousins sitting on the verandah and a snake curled up on a ledge about 3 foot above their head.

visit lakes in Perak

by abudabi40

going in a 4x4 down muddy lanes and across tracks to reach the glory that are the lakes of Perak. Go visit the real Malaysian countryside and see buffalo and otters, fish in the fish crammed lakes, or just wander in a 4x4 getting 'down and dirty' in the real Malaysia.Get away from the cities, especially KL, Cyberjaya and Putrajaya and go into the countryside.

Tabin Wildlife Reserve

by mickeyfontana

This place is superb - visit if you can! The wildlife is amazing and easy to see.Getting to Tabin from KK involves a flight to Lahad Datu (easily available through FAX) and then a 90 minute road journey through endless palm oil plantations, but once there it is worth it for the very real chance of seeing rainforest wildlife in close quarters. Try not to get demoralised by the journey through the planations, by thinking about what used to be there, and focus on the conservation that it taking place. The camp is small and features a natural swimming hole. In this swimming hole alone we saw bats, a family of otters (brilliant), macaques (fighting & mating!), water monitor lizards, hornbills and numerous insects and butterflies - all within 200 metres of our chalet. There were few guests when we stayed, meaning the accomodation was extremely quiet and the animals don't seem put off by the...

Kuantan and the night market

by hdwoernd

Many "bible" tourist guides write bad about the big growing capital city Kuantan. For me it's one the most typical Malaysian cities i've seen (mostly east coast).Shops are growing, lifestyle is natural, people have some money, the ethncical groupsare typically mixed and durgin 3 days i've seen 2 other tourists.Best Thing: There is a weekly night market (saturday), spezialiced on Food (50%), new and used clothes. It's much better than the one in KL.

Chinese Gambling...

by hdwoernd

There is a top attraction in Malaysia which is nearly only used by chinese malay. It includes the biggest Hotel in the world, a funpark and: Casinos! The Genting Highland Resorts are discovered on the top of a mountain 1h east of KL. It imitates Las Vegas and some things are even bigger. So modern chinese gambling is not that different to US casinos but it's more interesting watching the people. Saudi muslim (the only other kind of foreign tourists) are hanging out in any kind of fast food restaurants enjoing the fun-park and the "snow world" while chinese are gambling 24h per day. There are very cheap offers in the daily newspapers, so if you got one night left...

Enjoy Kampung-Life

by hdwoernd

Go to the most northern district on the east coast to Kota Bharu. Many tourist guides only recognize this nice town in the most islamic part of the country for the cheap hostels to quickly pass to the perhentian islands.Between Kota Bharu and PCB there is a area of nice villages. In "Pasir Belanda" afriendly dutch family offers 3 nice guest houses and they organize contact to local people.Make the Batik lesson, ride the bicicle and eat with locals...

LATA KINJANG Waterfall

If you've ever taken a road trip to the North, no doubt you would have noticed (or been awed, like me) by the sight of LATA KINJANG, a towering waterfall that is visible from the North-South Highway on the route from KL towards Ipoh. Access is a little tricky, and was in fact the greatest barrier preventing us from checking it out. All that changed last Saturday when we finally made it there :) more tips in a bit...

gunung dato

by ahch0ng

gunung dato (884m)location - rembau, negeri sembilan, malaysiaThe summit of this mountain not a good picnic place for locals but it is a good place for the hiker who like camping style. The trekking road nothing special, all the trek to the summit, it is just a normal Malaysia rain forest, but the special and attractive part is there have strong wind & big granite stone on the summit.
