Set in landscaped gardens, the restaurant is a big favourite with foreign visitors. It can accommodate up to 500 people, with the nightly cultural show and local buffet menu being the biggest attractions. The cultural show is the real fun part. The restaurant puts up a traditional Malay wedding ceremony and folk dances from Malaysia's various states. The colorful dresses and delicate dancing movements of female dancers really captivate people. Those who like the restaurant enough can buy the T-shirt, literally, at the on-site souvenir shop. Price: RM75.

This is the only restaurant that we found would serve Doorians. However, raw Doorians are not served. They are beaten into a paste and cooked with milk to give you something that can be eaten with relish. We would categorise the taste in the same group as Middle-Eastern Umm-e-Ali and Iran's/Pakistan's Sheer Khoormah. Otherwise, one can always sample traditional Chinese, Malay and Indian dishes including kari ayam (chicken curry), ikan bilis (fried anchovies), mee rebus (noodles in a rich sauce) and roti canai (tasty Indian bread). Our personal favorites: You can't come to this restaurant for buffet and miss out Malay Satay. So have plenty of this. Besides, Malay rice is good.

Backpakcers ( and even the richies ) should be happy to know that the most popular breakfast snack costs only 60 - 80 sen in most places in Malaysia, city or village. The famous ROTI CANAI could be an Indian idea, but now no one knows whether it's Arabic, Malay or Malaysian invention. But try it, less than US 0.50 for ROTI CANAI plus your coffee ( or chocolate ). What a way to survive !@ If you don't mind sticking to this diet, you could survive a month in Malaysia with only RM 50 !

Good ones like Nasi Kandar shops ( Indian Muslims ) give you this in comfort and bright cheerful surroundings. In the smaller towns and kampungs, you could be sitting beside the highway and taking in much dust when you try to enjoy your ROI CANAI ! But survive you will, fear not ...........

After the trip to Patrosains Museum, we were really tired. It was about 6:30 p.m. and we wanted our dinner and a tea cup badly before heading for home. Lo and behold. As we got out of the Museum Hall, we found a foodcourt by the name of 'Asian Flavours' towards our left. The foodcourt has restaurants offering pan-Asian food from Japans to Middle-Eastern. It was not as crowded when we sat down, but within an hour, it was almost packed to capacity. Reason - time to go home as offices close. So why not have dinner here before hitiing the road.

We were having Malay and Chinese till this time. So we settled for North Indian food that resembles our own taste. Go for parathas, Mughlai chicken and Tandoori dishes.

North & East Indian Cuisine.: Its like home - Indo-Pakistani food
  • Tip Rating:

  • This is the restaurant that we chose at Asian Flavours foodcourt. We did this because we were missing our home food. People who had their dinners here included Australians, Indonesians, and Western Europeans, mainly Germans. We were able to determine that from their conversations. No, there were not many Americans in this part of the world in any case.

    Mughali and Tandoori food.

While returning from a trip to historic Bukit Melawati, we visited the little touristy town of Melawati located at the foot of Melawati hills. We had a sumptuous sea food dinner at the most favorite Chinese restaurant in the town. The restuarant is located by the sea with beautiful views of the sea on one side and protruding hills of Bukit Melawati on the other.

    Local delicacies...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Primarily consisting of Malay, Chinese and Indian food, it also has its hybrids derived from cross cultural influences such as Mamak (Indian-Muslim) and Nyonya (the Malay-Chinese mix). A dish with the same name also exists in different location but that doesn't mean it's the same as its of a different flavor and the 'Chinese Rojak' is quite different from the 'Indian Rojak'. Nevertheless the main staple of diet shared by all Malaysians is rice, which is steamed and eaten with a variety of dishes. Hawker stalls are a favourite haunt for Malaysians from all walks of life. All over Malaysia you can find them along the roadside or hawker centers in the marketplace and even in the shopping malls, Roadside stall are usually open until midnight and is a great place for a meet and a chat. There are also the usual complement of coffee shops, restaurants in different settings and also in the five star hotels.

With our multi-cultural social mix, you certainly can expect somewhat of a unique and endless blend of cuisine !

You've got to try this !
  • Tip Rating:
  • char koay teow is what this is call and it's one of the many local favourites that I enjoy. there's many place where you can try this meal but so far, the best that I've taken is actually the street behind Jalan Alor. It's a corner shoplot opposite Park Inn Hotel. One plate would cost you about RM3.50 - also depending on the outlet. If you go by to a hotel to have a plate of char koay teow, the price is of course more expensive !

rice noodles fried with chili and soya sauce, cockles, beansprout, egg and sometimes Chinese sausage

Barn Thai: Dont's miss this restaurant
  • Tip Rating:

  • What make it very special is the 450 metres walk way in the mangrove trees leading to the restaurant. We found this place occassionally when we came out from the bird paradise . I would strongly recommend you to go there if you by chance passing by the "bird paradise".It's right opposite it.

The food is a bit expensive respect average Thai restaurant, but you can order some simple good .Very delicious and Thai. The environment is unique , I will never forget the feeling walking on the wooden path surrounded by manglaves.
