De Steps: Best IKAN

by kyoub

Up on Bukit Malawati is a restaurant named De Steps. When we got into the restaurant we discovered that no one there spoke english and we didn't speak malay. We told them ikan and they brought a platter with a huge fish and some side dishes. That was the best fish I have ever tasted. We went back again the following night for more. There is also a great view from up on the hill.

Promenade Cafe: Best Asian Buffet

by kyoub

The Promenade Cafe inside the Promenade Hotel, in Kota Kinabalu, puts out a super buffet. It was huge, filling one room, with the desserts in another. Everything we tried was very good also.I would recommend this restaurant highly. When we were there they were having a promotion called " Happy Harvest Festival".

Gayana Island Restaurant: Watch the fish while you eat

by kyoub

It was so much fun having breakfast in the open air restaurant out on Gayana Island. You could sit and watch the fish swim around in the water as you was eating. The food was very good also. There was usually a buffet fro breakfast unless there were not many guests.Lunch and dinner was ordered off the menu. At night there were lights shining in the water so you could watch the fish then also.

Fruit Farms: Fruit

by kyoub

Malaysia is a garden of fruits all year round. There are the usual pineapple, bananas, & papaya as well as some that you have probably never see before. Some are seasonal so you see different fruits at different times of the year. At least one will become your favorite that you long to taste after leaving Malaysia. It might be the durian, the guava, the rambutan, mangosteens, the jackfruit, the starfruit, or the pomelo. If you are lucky you will find them at times in your local superrnarket but it won't be the same.

Street Vendors: Nasi Lemak

by daryll

Nasi Lemak is Malaysian most favourite nation breakfast meal. A typical Malay meal can be found almost any stalls and restaurants. Some restaurants to served Nasi Lemak as main meal for lunch or dinner. But the tradition is that should be eaten in the morning as breakfast. Nasi Lemak is consist of boiled coconut rice served with spicy prawn paste, anchovies, peanuts, boiled egg and fresh slices cucumber.

Penang - "Asam Laksa" soup

by ant1606

One of Penang specialties is the "asam laksa" noodle soup, and our local friend Stacey took us for a taste of the best in town at a "hawker" food area near, or on the way to, Kek Lok Si temple in Georgetown. We sat at a table on the roadside, next to the boiling laksa cauldron, and had our share of the spicy, tasty, huge soup that came in a bowl. Next stall was selling squeezed sugar cane juice and we took advantage of it. I don't have a clear picture of the ingredients, but it's basically rice noodles in a thick broth made with fish along with chili peppers, fresh mint leaves and other spices. Many customers bought it to go into plastic bags and the cook was very busy with the ladle. If you're not comfortable with street cuisine, with splashes of cooking food or dishwashing on the ground near an open sewer, try something else. We enjoyed it and it was a great experience.

Harper's: Melaka - Harper's

by ant1606

If not for its location, I would not rate Harper's one of the best eateries. The restaurant has an indoor room and an al-fresco area, both overlooking the Melaka river. We got a window table on the historical natural harbor that helped the city to flourish, our view was on boat traffic and the opposite river bank. The facing restaurant backyard was not the cleanest, as it looked like a practical dumpsite for that eatery's leftovers. In fact, a monitor lizard stopped for a snack right there on the stone steps before slipping into the murky waters again.Ceiling fan, smells and sights contributed to an exotic ambience that made us wonder what life would have been in those days of the early European outpost and following centuries. Food selection is rather limited and we tried two varieties of fish ("ikan" in Malay) and an eggplant dish accompannied by coconut rice ("nasi lemak"). Pretty...

Roti Canai: The Malaysian ICON

by gnh

Backpakcers ( and even the richies ) should be happy to know that the most popular breakfast snack costs only 60 - 80 sen in most places in Malaysia, city or village. The famous ROTI CANAI could be an Indian idea, but now no one knows whether it's Arabic, Malay or Malaysian invention. But try it, less than US 0.50 for ROTI CANAI plus your coffee ( or chocolate ). What a way to survive !@ If you don't mind sticking to this diet, you could survive a month in Malaysia with only RM 50 ! Good ones like Nasi Kandar shops ( Indian Muslims ) give you this in comfort and bright cheerful surroundings. In the smaller towns and kampungs, you could be sitting beside the highway and taking in much dust when you try to enjoy your ROI CANAI !But survive you will, fear not ...........
